Pre-Game Talk: Apparently Skinner is starting Game 2

It’s funny how everyone here is complaining about Skinner starting when Pickard might be even worse.

It’s not like we have Hellebuyck waiting in the wings folks
Fake fan alert

Anyways Nurse, RNH, Emberson, Connor Brown, and Frederic are all playing like total crap with Nurse the king of all crap. Coach needs to yell at these fools to step it up and to get Hyman going again cause its been argued to death but the team will FIGHT for Pickard and Pickard controls the flow of the game WAY BETTER THAN SKINNER. The team totally shuts down Skinner cause he's an egotistical maniac who cannot man the hell up for once in his life. Pickard is already that dude though. Much more Mike Smith than Skinner could ever DREAM or DAYDREAM about being. Just my opinion though.

I don't know why we're surprised by Skinner starting again. They have reiterated, over and over ad nauseam that he is their starter, they have faith in him etc. etc. He's had drops in save percentage for the past 3 years, and they still haven't bothered investing into another option.

Glad to see Kane in. Jeff Skinner really didn't do anything to leave an impact, and during the season they actually dressed BROWN over him for a stretch of several games. Speaks volumes as to the lack of trust, and as a guy in his first playoff game ever, after 1000+ games.. he should have performed far better. No problem with this, Kane will have an impact, even if his timing will be very far off and he has a tonne of rust to shave away.

Klingberg apparently in for Brown.. well virtually anyone is a better option than Brown. But Klingberg is going to get targeted and plays a soft game. He was ok during regular season I suppose but will he survive playoffs? I don't really have much faith here.. but still, a better option than Brown.

It remains to be seen if they show up on time. Let's start with that, shall we? FFS.

Skinner comes into play 25 pounds heavier. Has a bad season. I wouldn’t blame 97 for not re-signing - you can’t have a guy playing goal who doesn’t take winning seriously
I keep hearing this 25 pound rumor the last few days. Is there any kind of link out there corroborating this claim or did it start as a tweet and grow legs.

If it's true, the team should have created consequences for that right out of camp. Suspend the guy for reporting out of shape (which is allowed) and force him to get his shit together.

Stuart with the Mike Smith, allow me to redeem myself. But he's the anti-Mike Smith. Play him and he just costs the Oilers another game.

I dunno... I don't think I've ever seen another goalie gift a game like Mike Smith. Far more Jekyll and Hyde with him. Skinner is just always consistently below average and not quite good enough (and therefore not always to blame, despite the narrative around here).

Starting Skinner is the right move. The team sucked for 2 full periods less 10 seconds last game. If he sucks again then you run Pickard until he falters. We are not winning a cup with just one goalie performing. We need both goalies playing well or we are done.

15 goals primarily playing with the best passer in the game at ES. Arvidsson's and Podkolzin's lack of goalscoring with Drai is criminal. They should have at least 40 goals between them yet they have a little over 20 combined.
Drai needs help on that line for sure but who do we have? Hopefully Kane eventually.

Pickard plays a competitive style and he has a way of finding saves in key moments.

Skinner folds at the first sign of any pressure.

They both suck, but one of them has the ability and wherewithal to compete and elevate beyond his normal capabilities at times. The other one just parks his ass on the line and hopes it hits him.
I mean one has been playing much lower competition all year and has a lower GSAx.

And it’s not like Skinner has never elevated before. He shut out the Kings last year even.

The Mike Smith commentary is pure revisionism, similar to Talbot.

Smith was abysmal, terrible in the 2022 series against the Avalanche. Allowed the winner on a Grade B in a tied Game 3 with minutes left, and was Swiss cheese in another winnable Game 4. One could argue he cost the Oilers both of those games single handedly. This was after allowing a tying goal from the opposite blue line against the Flames in Game 4 that he got bailed out of, and also after he collapsed completely the year before in Game 3 against the Jets.

Smith had his moments, but could implode with the best of them. By the end of the 2022 playoffs he was just done. Sadly we just replace goalies that collapse and blow games series with other goalies that collapse and blow games/series.

Thank you for making the declaration that I am not a real fan. Very insightful

Yet in his two playoff starts he allowed goals inside the final 2 minutes to turn the games. The first being a tying goal inside the 2 minute mark that fortunately Bouchard got right back to get him the win, the 2nd being a game winner with about 30 seconds to go.

Didn't seem to have that big save in a critical moment in those games.

I appreciate Skinner sucks and all, but it's not like we have a 23 year old Hellebuyck sitting on the bench waiting to take the reigns from him, or even a Aiden Hill journeyman waiting for his chance to run with it.

I'd have started Skinner tonight as well, but with a short leash that if he loses the game or gets lit up in a victory, Game 3 goes to Pickard and he keeps the net until he loses.
