Anyone else think Connor Bedard is extremely overrated and isn’t even close to being generational?

It’s far too early for “generational”, but I don’t think that was an expectation from reasonable observers. He’s more of a “strong 1st overall” type player, more in the company of Kane than Crosby, more of a Matthews than a McDavid. And maybe he doesn’t even hit that level… it’s early yet, with a lot left to prove.

Does that make him overrated? Well, he’s the best young kid in the game. And so he has the best chance of being that next big star. Unless you’re holding firm to “generational” as the bar he needs to clear, he seems properly rated.

Habs offer Ryder, Halak and a third.
Edit: Sorry, I thought this was the summer thread where we just say the same thing we say every summer because our PVR is busted and Mom took the PS5 in for repairs.

To be fair though, Mcdavid had Hall, RNH, Draisaitl, Eberle on his team

Crosby is fair, and bedard hasn’t lived up to what those two have done

depending on what he does next year, my expectation is 90-95 points, id probably have him slotted as a Matthews-level player, not a Mcdavid/Crosby

However, he is a 19 year old and who knows how he actually comes out next year.
Crosby had lemieux, palffy, leclair, recchi, gonchar on his team

I wasn’t impressed by his rookie year. He was under a ppg and a -44 in his rookie year. He is garbage defensively, among the worst I’ve ever seen amongst forwards. The Blackhawks gave up more goals with him on the ice than without. He’s small and not a great skater. He’s bad at the dot. He was heavily sheltered and didn’t face top lines and still was often caved in. He rarely dominated games. He’s extremely one dimensional. Even with his jaw injury he failed to be over a PPG. I would have expected the generational prospect to at least be over that and make the guys around him solid. Him winning the Calder was a joke. It should have been Brock Fabrer. Oh, and he was awful in the IIHF tournament.

He will never be close to Connor McDavid’s, Sidney Crosby’s or Alex Ovechkin’s level. All he has is a good shot, but not the speed or hands of Matthews or the physicality. I’m not even sure he can even be an Auston Matthews, Leon Draisaitl, Nikita Kucherov or Nathan MacKinnon level guy. Maybe he can be a Steven Stamkos or John Tavares type player in time, a good player but never among the best in a season, but he’s in no way generational and I don’t buy the hype. I don’t even think he’ll surpass other Chicago legends like Patrick Kane.
This is bold. But you know what? I’ve felt similar.. to a lesser extent. I think he will be an offensive dynamo. But he’s not generational. Also, he did t deserve the Calder. That was bullshit. Brock Faber deserved it 100%.

I'm gonna give it two more seasons. He is very young, but I have had large ???s about the insane hype he had coming in since it began.

Crosby actually did have some good linemates his first year, even if the team was bad overall. As far as defence and faceoffs - young guys are rarely good at either.

He is going to be good, remains to be seen how good. The media could definitely be looked back on a laughed at if he turns out to be a Tavares, which i think is possible.

I’d be bummed too if I got the worse prospect than a guy like Matvei Michkov. I’d also rather have Macklin Celebrini than Bedard. At least Celebrini has a 200 foot game.

Not a troll. This is my honest opinion. The glazing over Bedard last year was annoying as f*** when he did nothing to deserve it.
Connor Bedard scored 61 points in 68 NHL games (.897 PPG), while Matvei Michkov had 41 points in 48 KHL games (.854 PPG). Seems like Michkov is totally overrated. He may as well stay in Russia and learn to make vodka, since he seems to be a certain bust!!!

Probably a little too much hype but then again he might just score 100 next season. I don't think he's crosby mcdavid but that's not really a knock on anyone

I don't think that most people considered him actually a generational prospect, as in Crosby/McDavid or better. His hype was well below theirs until the WJC, so it was only a relatively short window of months rather than years where he generated near that kind of buzz. He won't be that good. However he could be say, as good as MacKinnon or Matthews, and that's very acceptable for a first overall type.

Even then however, how many 18 year olds since the lockout have had better seasons than Bedard just did? Crosby obviously, McDavid also assuming we aren't killing guys for missing time.... that's about it off the top of my head. MacKinnon had a very good year at 18 but Bedard's year was more impressive. His season sits right in line with sub-generational but right near the top of the next level.

I never thought he was gonna be generational, but he’s gonna be a superstar

I wouldn't take any Blackhawks 2024 forward other than Bedard over 2006 Leclair, Palffy, Armstrong, Recchi or Malone. The Hawks were just atrocious offensively.

I don't see a world where Bedard doesn't get a 100 pts season next season outside of injury. Hell he made Kurashev a 59pts pace player, Foligno had his best offensive season in 7 years, Bedard is a stud.

I'm not sure if you were born yesterday, but Stamkos pre-injury was competing with prime Ovechkin. If Bedard turns into that, being compared to the greatest goal scorer in history isn't the knock you think it is.

Oilers fans don’t claim OP.

Just look at that lineup Bedard had surrounding him. Seriously it’s impressive that he put up as many points as he did.

I think any talk about what he might be is too early. We need to see him with legit talent around him first.

Oilers fan managed to find ways to be annoying even during the offseason. Bravo!

I hold to my stance that I've had on him for a few years.

Bedard is an excellent player and will be one of the most productive players in the league. I feel the hype he got definitely won't be one he lives up to though.

I feel he'll be the next Stamkos (after Matthews). A really great player, among the top producers in the league, but never quite hitting the same dominance as McDavid or Crosby.

He doesn't have the speed of McDavid and isn't big enough to overcome some of his 'flaws' (flaws in quotations because they aren't flaws, just things that keep him out of the McDavid tier). I don't think he'll ever be dominant on the middle of the ice and will rely on strong teammates to be as dominant as he'll need to be to win cups.

A great prospect/ young player right now but not the next generational talent many hope he'll be.
