Anyone else think Connor Bedard is extremely overrated and isn’t even close to being generational?

I wasn’t impressed by his rookie year. He was under a ppg and a -44 in his rookie year. He is garbage defensively, among the worst I’ve ever seen amongst forwards. The Blackhawks gave up more goals with him on the ice than without. He’s small and not a great skater. He’s bad at the dot. He was heavily sheltered and didn’t face top lines and still was often caved in. He rarely dominated games. He’s extremely one dimensional. Even with his jaw injury he failed to be over a PPG. I would have expected the generational prospect to at least be over that and make the guys around him solid. Him winning the Calder was a joke. It should have been Brock Fabrer. Oh, and he was awful in the IIHF tournament.

He will never be close to Connor McDavid’s, Sidney Crosby’s or Alex Ovechkin’s level. All he has is a good shot, but not the speed or hands of Matthews or the physicality. I’m not even sure he can even be an Auston Matthews, Leon Draisaitl, Nikita Kucherov or Nathan MacKinnon level guy. Maybe he can be a Steven Stamkos or John Tavares type player in time, a good player but never among the best in a season, but he’s in no way generational and I don’t buy the hype. I don’t even think he’ll surpass other Chicago legends like Patrick Kane.

He played on a terrible team. Had an injury.

Hmmm, account created today, only one post, and a Mcdavid profile pic. At least try to make yourself not look like a troll.

Ok, thanks for the input. Yeah, I'm sure Blackhawk fans are super bummed @ having this guy
I’d be bummed too if I got the worse prospect than a guy like Matvei Michkov. I’d also rather have Macklin Celebrini than Bedard. At least Celebrini has a 200 foot game.

Not a troll. This is my honest opinion. The glazing over Bedard last year was annoying as f*** when he did nothing to deserve it.

While I do think he under-performed relative to the pre-season hype (talk of him being a McDavid or Crosby level talent right out of the gate), I think it's silly to write a player off after their 18 year old rookie season on a bad team.

I expect a pretty big improvement this upcoming season. Wouldn't surprise me if he surpassed 90 points or so.

Sidney Crosby played on an awful Penguins team and put up over 100 points as a rookie. Connor McDavid was on pace to be top 5 in the league in points his rookie year before succumbing to injury. If Bedard was so good he could have turned guys like Kurashev into 60+ point forwards.
To be fair though, Mcdavid had Hall, RNH, Draisaitl, Eberle on his team

Crosby is fair, and bedard hasn’t lived up to what those two have done

depending on what he does next year, my expectation is 90-95 points, id probably have him slotted as a Matthews-level player, not a Mcdavid/Crosby

However, he is a 19 year old and who knows how he actually comes out next year.

A generational talent should be on Connor McDavid’s level. Not Auston Matthews’s.

man, not even 10 words in and you unironically used plus/minus as a stat to determine a player's value.
The horrible plus minus, which others on the team weren’t nearly as bad, shows how horrid his 200 foot game was. Brock Faber should have won the Calder. Minnesota has the better player. And he wasn’t even a first round pick.

No one other than Crosby scored 60 points other than him in his rookie year.

You're complaining that Bedard didn't get Kurashev 60 points, when he scored 25 the season before and Bedard missed 14 games and Kurashev missed 5. And was 6 points shy.

Sounds like some weird hating.

McDavid and Crosby would have been great regardless, but let’s not pretend that their supporting cast isn’t better than what Bedard had.

Also, have fun comparing anyone to McDavid and Crosby. That is not the bar for rookies.

I feel bad for feeding the troll but this is so ridiculous.

plus/minus is a garbage stat. literally. Use it in a conversation with an NHL analyst or scout and you will be pointed and laughed at almost instantly.

Just shows that Crosby and McDavid will always be vastly superior to Bedard.

It’s not a bad stat when it’s horrifically low.

2005-06 was the highest scoring season in league history thanks to the new rules coming out of the lockout by a very, very wide margin.

We are having some of the highest scoring in league history and Bedard couldn’t even crack a 70 point pace

You think Bedard was on the ice for more than 145 goals against?

Crosby played with Lemieux, Palffy, Gonchar, Leclair, Recchi, etc. He had legit talent around him.

That’s not to say that Bedard is Crosby. He’s not. But Chicago last year was worse than Pittsburgh in Crosby’s rookie year.

The Blackhawks were even worse defensively whenever he was on the ice.

Then the media needs to stop calling him a generational talent when he’s clearly not.

Lindros didn't have the most statistically dominant rookie season (relative to top scorers) and he turned out fine. I wouldn't write Bedard off yet.

Even if he ends up not being generational, he should be at least as good as Matthews or Hughes.
