Anyone else annoyed by the way stats are used?

1939 vs bruins
1950 vs detroit stanley cup final double OT
1971 vs chicago
1974 vs flyers
2009 vs washington

Damn good thing Tortorella benched Vic Hadfield for not jumping in and saving Dale Rolfe in 1974.

everyone makes a big deal about that incident. but the reality is the league came out with the 3rd man in rule and you would get thrown out of the game if you jumped into 3rd man situation. it was a game 7 and no one on the Rangers wanted to get thrown out of a game 7

I love that they do that with the stats. Granted it has no bearing on today's game, but getting my head filled with more useless information that I can quote to my wife at dinner is AWESOME.

In all seriousness, what I like more than anything is that it brings the history of the game back to the forefront if for snippets at a time.

I love the fact that the NHL embraces their history more than most of the othe sports (sans the Yankees that do nothing but shove it down EVERYONES throats)

And while you may think alot of those stats are meaningless, they aren't. 1-11 in Washington and now you are playing them in a game 7? That's a daunting task and it's not like the players don't know these things. They know them as well and it plays on you.

The crap that we go thorugh in Montreal? think those stats don't mean anything? Of course they do. They are real. The struggles that we have with the Pens, they are real.

The 1-11 record or whatever it is against Washington IN Washington is legit and something to be mindfull of even if it has no actual bearing on today's game.

These records and stats don't become quotable if they are even keeled.

They are slanted and they are real and why they are what they are is something that cannot be explained.

I love when the announces provide all of the stats they provide. helps make the entertainment factor of the game that much more intriguing.

Hadfield was injured and basically useless to the team. He was the captain. He should have jumped in and saved his teammate from a beating. Emile Francis was so pissed off that he traded Hadfield to Pittsburgh 2 weeks later for a bag of pucks.

I dont mind this stuff too much. I think its more about spreading historical knowledge than statistical comparisons.

But yes, when someone starts trying to parallel this Bruins series vs. what happened 40 years ago, it is stupid.

And this is where I differ with alot of posters on this HF board (not just the Rangers)

Doesn't matter what game it was, what the time of the game was.

You see a teammate getting hammered like that, you do something.

I could care less what Brad Park had to say about that.

That's a team strengthening moment and the guys on the bench see that happening and what the boys on the ice do in those situations has a direct effect on what the boys on the bench are feeling.

3rd man in gets tossed, the boys on the bench get amped up to step in and make a difference.

Boys on the ice are content to let that happen, that breeds contentment on the bench.

Rangers scored the first goal after that happened, but the Flyers scored the following 3 to to take a 3-1 lead heading into the 3rd period.

Anyone and everyone that I have spoken to that watched that game after that happened have all said the same thing, the Rangers were DONE after that.

I would dispise any Rangers player that allowed that and still have a bit of resentment towards Girardi for allowing Gaborik to get handled by Carcillo a few years back.
