Any cities you wish had a team (not in Canada)?

Makes sense

Your mention of the Sooners reminded me when I was at a Nashville game I met a young woman who played hockey for the Auburn Tigers. Didn't even realize they have a hockey program- apparently my fiend who is an alum and a diehard football fan didn't either.
ACHA - basically all the P4 universities and a plethora of others have a team at that level (if not more than one) but it's considered a club level sport for various reasons.

What is your ideal number?

It's never going to be less than it is now.

16 teams make the playoffs, 16 teams don't make the playoffs.

So no more than 32 teams. Which I think without looking it up is where we are at.

If they go for more than that, well I think I'd be ok with that ONLY if they then bring in the "relegation" system that they have in the Premiere League.

Mesa, Arizona. It's time the desert had a hockey team.

Move them from Winnipeg since the owner who is the richest Canadian in the world doesn't seem to want to invest in the city.
I can tell you for certain this was dangerously close with the muerello group. Like one check box away from being done. Mayor Giles was pushing for the 202/alma site. The gentlemen that owns the land that was once fiesta mall was also open to selling. Wish it could have come into fruition

I mean google mapping it, I'd suspect a massive rivalry arises between Milwaukee, Detroit, Minnesota and Chicago.

Sounds ideal.

Worth a try?
Hell yeah!

I don't know why but I like the Midwest regional composition. It just has a different feel than the coastal groups like NY/Boston/Philadelphia.

Gives the league a more nitty gritty, heartland feel ( if that makes any sense)

People who want to see less teams feel that way for two reasons. They never think about the other side of it, including what it's like to lose a team.

The two reasons are (1) giving teams a better likelihood of winning a Cup within a fans lifetime and (2) concentrating talent on fewer teams would lead to a better product. Reason 1 is logical.

Reason 2, I have a lot harder time agreeing with. Yes, you concentrate the offensive talent, but you're also concentrating the defensive talent and goaltending. More high quality defenders on each team means better ability to execute stifling defensive systems. It's more likely we'd just see the same ebbs and flows to the game that we see today.
Reason (3) people love it when other people get heartbroken, disappointed, upset and saddened because they're mean and nasty. They also love to torment those people just for the hell of it.

The thing that stands out to me about San Diego as well is it could be a possible marketing portal into the Mexican/Mexican American market given the proximity to Tijuana. The NHL needs to pursue the Latino population; it's one of the largest and continually growing per se and as a proportion of the overall American population.

And if memory serves me right, metro San Diego is in itself 3M+? And no NBA or NFL team to compete with for the sports entertainment dollar
Last I saw on the local news was the population is some where between 2.5-3M if you count the gray areas at the outside edges of San Diego county. I have not looked into it on the data level or any Google searches. Just remember that from a news broadcast a few months ago.

And no there is no NBA team. The Chargers were here but they moved to LA and a lot of the fans now shun the team due to how badly the owner f***ed over the city in that whole situation. The city/county offered him land downtown beside PetCo Park (amazingly beautiful baseball venue) and I can’t remember the split but it was with the tax payer taking on the majority of build cost. Which a downtown venue in a tourist hub like San Diego that’s basically a personal ATM machine. And because the tax payers wouldn’t 100% front the build he moved the team to LA. It soured a huge portion of the Chargers fans to cheering for the team.

No NBA team. There has been on the street rumors a couple of times since I’ve lived here about this or that franchise being moved here by an ownership group. But I zero percent follow the NBA so I don’t know how serious those were.

The Padres capitalize on exactly what you are talking about. There is a massive San Diego fan base in Mexico. Massive. And the NHL would be smart to try and tap into that. The Padres signed radio and tv deals all the way down to Mexico City. Every time there is a big Padres game you find people all over that are from south of the border that have come up for the game.

It baffles me why he would want to be a second fiddle in LA. I wonder how he's exrrscting more money in LA as a tensnt rather than the BMOC in San Diego.

Los Locos del(de?) San Diego has a nice ring to it.

Perhaps Los Santos?

I have always had an intrigument with San Diego and would love to see a Blue Jays game there or a Senstors game against Los Locos. 😏

It’s because he didn’t want to pay anything at all for the arena. He’s one of the cheapest penny pinching owners in the NFL. And he foolishly thought that he could move to LA he would keep the San Diego fans, and he would be able to grab up some of the LA market. I have not been. But I have friends that have gone to Chargers games against divisional rivals while in a playoff hunt and the arena is maybe 60-70% full. Long and short of it Spanos is a f***ing moron.

Yeah, I remember seing games and the stands were so empty.

I keep hearing that they don't register on the LA sports conscience. It's all Rams, which is no surprise given they returned to LA after a 25 bearish absence but a 40 plus year existence before that.
