think its very representative of where his games currently at. still some work to do with stuff like play tracking when the puck gets underneath him, response to pressure, inconsistent handling at times, but also shows some great progress in terms of neutral zone aggression, breakout decisions, overall puck management, activation ideas, and so on

also, as has been raved about in recent posts, the recoverability and play stopping from behind/a position of disadvantage is just insane, not even 2 minutes in youll see multiple great stops. we all loved that one luke play against the blues and while its an exaggeration to say it happens all the time with silayev, its certainly not uncommon in his viewings

This game pretty much demonstrates what we already knew. Size and skating combination is ridiculous. So fluid. Thrives in defending the rush and can recover effortlessly.

His IQ with stationary in-zone defending needs to be improved, but that should come with experience. He's a little unnatural/awkward in those situations, especially net front play when the opponent has established puck control.

I think the biggest negative to his game right now is that he really fights the puck and struggles with puck management. Frequently fumbles the puck, puts the puck in dangerous situations, and turns the puck over. Get him a ton of time with a skills coach.

Long story short: tantalizing upside with the size/skating combo and reach, but still some very rough edges that need work. He'll have to marinate for a while, and thankfully we have depth that can absorb the development time.

This part of the prospect process is a lot of fans looking for gaudy stats. Being an 18 year old dman in the KHL isn't gonna provide that

I feel like when the biggest problem with a 6’7 18 year old is not being the most coordinated you’re in pretty good shape. That’ll probably improve just as he gets more comfortable in his body and he already has a level of coordination with his feet that’s basically unheard of at his size.

I’ve read that male core strength peaks around 25. That helps with balance, among other things with skating, I assume it’s even more helpful if you’re huge.

Yeah, even Nikishin, the gold standard for D prospects currently outside the NHL, didn't really start posting points until his D+3 season.

Now Silayev isn't Nikishin with the puck (obviously) but nikishin isn't silayev without it, so he doesn't have to be.

early game today, caught a little over half of it

• didnt love his play on the 1st DYN goal. usually appreciate his willingness to challenge shooters/take away space but on a 5 on 3 i thought he exposed too much of the net front/back door in the process. now, the play was a sharp angle shot off a rebound from the back boards, maybe it was going in either way, but to me hes still gotta approach it more conservatively
• what i did like was he was sent right back out on the following pk (after a failed challenge) and made a big kick save in the paint to get the puck away from a wide open net. had stepped up for another challenge right beforehand but a much better decision on it
• was out for the 2nd DYN goal as well but no issue on that one, thought he stuck to his man well and used his stick to take away the option while he collapsed on the net. couple TOR skaters asleep on this goal lol
• rewarded with an assist on a simple shot from the point that created a scramble in front and led to the eventual GWG. nothing special here, but the play doesnt happen without him. today was pretty defensive/pk heavy as a whole so i didnt see much else offensively
• had a standout shift in the mid 3rd that felt like a glimpse of things to come, everything combined defensively at an elite level. started tight to the net, big stick to deflect a stray puck away, kept jabbing at a guy in front, completely neutralized him while crashing in on a loose puck (stapled the guy to the boards, established body position between him and the puck, and used his stick to take him out of play), used his big frame to shield the puck from a follow-up attempt to let his linemate retrieve it, showed good anticipation to step up and cleanly intercept a pass headed toward the net, skated up and away from danger with the puck, and made a controlled dump out of the zone (right onto the opposing net) to fully kill the attack. some of his best work of the season right there

otherwise largely standard albeit solid viewing. not much to say on the puck/in transition, defensive stick play was solid per usual, etc. there was one play where a DYN attacker tried to attack his triangle off the rush and silayev just casually smacked the puck away to the other side of the zone. dont know why i thought it was so funny (i guess because most forwards dont even bother trying that) but he was having none of it
