I remember watching a game last pre-season where the Canes played the Habs and Khudobin stood on his head. From that game onward, I was convinced that he had the potential to be an NHL starting goalie.

Last season he went on an unbelievable second half run which saw him finish with a .926 save percentage and a 2.3 GAA. His great play made him the defacto Hurricanes starter going into the 2014-2015 season, but he began the season 0-8-2 and Cam Ward proceeded to step in and play fairly well.

He has now won 6 straight games putting up a save percentage of .947 and a GAA of 1.46. He has looked extremely focused, athletic, and competitive.

Is he a legitimate #1 goaltender in the NHL today and will he lead to the eventual departure of Cam Ward and his albatross contract?

(I should also give a shout out to the Bruins goaltending development the past 8-10 years having developed Raycroft, Thomas, Hutchinson, Khudobin, Johnson, and Rask)

He was a Minesota prospect. Boston's development systen hardly is to praise for his achievements.

And yes, he is a legitimate starter with tons of bad luck in regard of his career. Just look at the Wild now and their goaltending troubles. And they traded Khudobin away. He always seems to end up on a team loaded in the G department. Now behind Ward and his contract.

He and Ward are both signed through next year. If Khudobin deserves to be the starter he'll be resigned and kept over, or simply just start over Ward.

His first few games were pretty bad this year but he's on fire right now.

If you compare their respective contracts Khudobin is by far the better commmodity. And don't forget the Canes, especially to start the season were just ouright awful. Khudobin just always seems to end up on a team with a starter pinned to his position by his contract. That doesn't mean any of those starters played bad. It's just what it is, bad luck.

Boston certainly deserves plenty of praise, not sure what makes you so defensive over such a small point.

And yes, he has starter potential. Very skilled, reminds me of Thomas.
 
the whole team was playing like ass at the start of the year due to injuries and being bad so that kind of explains his first 10 games

now they are healthy and winning games for no reason

There is nothing defensive here. I just know he was a legit NHL goaltender already when he came to Boston. In the end for Boston he was just a small piece. A good backup for a small period of time. Nothing special here from the business or development standpoint.

Boston DOES deserve plenty of praise, but not in a thread about Anton Khudobin.

Anyway, he showed flashes of what he could be in Minnesota too, albeit in short spurts. He isn't a legit #1 though, way too inconsistent. He's 28 though, so he might still get that down. Realistically I don't ever see him holding down a starting spot on even an average team though.

Khudobin was given a perfectly fair chance to take the starting position at the beginning of the season. He and Ward each started exactly 4 games in the month of October, alternating back and forth except for Khudobin's consecutive starts with a 4-day break in between. During that period, both of them had a sub-.900 save percentage and a 0-3-1 record.

On the 1st of November, Ward posted a shutout in the Canes' first win of the season. Peters went back to him the next night and he won again. It ended up being 4 wins in a row for Ward, and from that point forward he was the starter and Khudobin the backup.

And it's not like Khudobin was playing especially well in his losses. He had a couple of tough-luck games here and there, but on the whole he was unfocused and sloppy. Around mid-December he started looking like himself, but Ward was still playing extremely well and getting the bulk of the starts.

Since the new year, Khudobin has been the hot hand while Ward has cooled. Guess what, Khudobin has played the last 3 games in a row.

It's as fair as it can be. If Anton can find some consistency in his game, he'll play.
 
Both Ward and Khudobin played poorly in October. Ward simply found his game first and earned the starter's job from there. He's faltered a bit of late, which has given Khudobin the opportunity to step up and try and win the starter job back.

Neither player is getting anything less than they deserve.

The Bruins are amazing in drafting/developing goalies. Boston is a goaltending factory.

Kudos and congrats to Anton. Hope he finally gets paid his worth.

Prior to this season Johnson had very impressive numbers in 37 NHL games over the past 5 years. However, he is absolutely terrible right now and I feel bad for Isles fans for how he is still the back up and has played over 10 games. Not going to lie, I thought he was going to be a stud backup this season. Hopefully a trade can be worked out for Ramo.
 
I do think he has starter potential. He's a very inconsistent goaltender, though. Any guy who's ever had a crack at the NHL is capable of standing on his head and winning a few games. Only those who can consistently play at a very high level end up being starters. He's yet to prove that.

The part where he's inconsistent or the part where I can't see him holding down a starting spot on a playoff team?

Because neither of those statements are wrong.
