Player Discussion Anton Forsberg

As well as he is playing RIGHT now, I think he will be paid a lot more somewhere else. We have a goalie that deserves to play in the NHL after a sweet taste of it this year. Hate to see him go, but lets not get all caught up in the moment, he is sub par most of the time, he is just playing his way out of here I think.

The last time Forsberg played this well was when he didn't have a contract the next year.

I'd love to keep him around, but it seems unlikely he will continue this level of play with a multiyear deal. I think the Sens are better off just running with Levi next season and save a few million bucks.

Love Forsberg’s resurgence. He has between now and any relief duty behind Ullmark if they go deep in the playoffs to prove his worth for the next contract. It’s a good problem to have.

Merilainen has proven himself in the AHL already and played 12 season saving games with Ottawa. I don’t want to invest on Forsberg as a back up at the expense of Merilainen’s development as an NHL regular.

It’s also cheaper on the cap side of things with Merilainen as Ullmark’s backup. Many things can happen in a physical league between now and a potential playoff run. But all things being status quo, where Forsberg performs as he is now until the Sens’ season officially ends, I think Forsberg prices himself out of the optimum cap allocation range, as Ottawa will also be paying $1M of Korpisalo’s salary for the duration of his contract.

Merilainen’s emergence solidifies his departure from the team IMHO.

May the force be with Forsberg where he has a strong campaign with the Sens and gets rewarded with a decent contract elsewhere, more than he would make with Ottawa next season. He seems like a genuinely nice guy.

It feels to me like all of Forsberg's bad periods followed a return from injury. A double knee in particular. And he was struggling. Fan base was practically booing him in a 'get the bum outta here' kinda way. Had to be hard mentally. But he worked at it, persevered, and has redeemed himself solidly. That kind of accomplishment is worth rewarding because it is a testament to his strength and character.

Leevi was impressive and filled me with hope. But he hasnt proven anything yet. He could just as easily match his last hot streak with a cold streak. Forsy is a bird in the hand. A hand that leads to us having that much needed solid goalie tandem with a promising third at hand. Could remain a real organizational strength. Worth paying something for. But it has to fit too. Tough call.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how things play out in the off-season with the goaltending.
The most games Ullmark has every played in a season is 49 games and that was his Vezina winning season in 22-23. He missed a pretty big chunk of the season with injury this year.

We definitely need a very capable back-up.
All things point to that being Leevi with the way he played when he came in earlier this year and basically saved the season for us. Not to mention the amount of cap space he would save, which is crucial for this team right now. That said, he is 22y/o and has a total of 14 NHL games under his belt.

If they decide to go with Leevi as the back-up, they are going to have to find a very solid #3, who is willing to sign a two-way deal and play in the AHL, at least to start the season. Something to remember is that Sogaard moves to one-way deal at $775k next season and all things point to him not being that #3 guy that we will need and I don't think Forsberg is going to be that guy because he has very likely earned himself a NHL contract for next season.

I don't think anyone else we currently have in the organization fits that need (maybe Malcom Subban?)
We will have to bring in a veteran that is agreeable to a 2-way deal and able to come in and have the ability to come in and play some games for Ottawa if injuries happen. Someone like Dustin Tokarski?
Maybe bring back Magnus Hellberg?
