Proposal: Anthony Mantha to MTL

Mantha is available for a 7th if I were GM, but I'm not paying to get rid of him

1 year left, new coach, we will take a punt on him bouncing back and riding it out

Mantha for Armia would be fair

Armia is paid 3,4 mil vs 5,7 mil for Mantha, but has one year more on his contract.
So 2,3 less on the cap but 1,1 more total.

Armia is better defensively, Mantha has the better offensive upside.

Seems like a win-win to me

I think you are mistaken on his contract. He has one year left at $5.7M then he’s a UFA after next season. He may be slightly overpaid but you could do a lot worse than Mantha for a year with that cap hit.

Mantha is a sad case to me. He was a good two-way middle six forward this season for Washington on pace for 20+ goals and 50 points through December and doing it all at even strength and then his game just fell off a cliff the second half. He has no confidence right now as Laviolette has handled him terribly and he’s overthinking everything. They’re also not utilizing his shot properly or deploying him on the PP. He’s been remarkably unlucky when it comes to finishing during his time in DC but he’s generally had strong underlying metrics.

My hope is that a new coach can rebuild his confidence and use him properly. He’s still a good player albeit a bit underwhelming given his combination of size and skill. I don’t think he’ll ever be a dominant top line winger like his size and skill set would allow him to be but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad player either.

New team, new coach, new season... same story

It's never going to change for Mantha unfortunately

A team getting Mantha for cheap for one year is much less risky than needing to get involved in what’s going to be a terrible UFA class this summer. Also, if, as you said he’s going to have value in February and you can acquire him for cheap this summer, that seems like smart asset management.
If Washington retains this summer, fully agree he’d have some solid trade value. If they don’t retain, he won’t.

I don’t think you’d even get a 6th round pick for him without retention.

It would be funny to ship out a guy like Mike Hoffman and bring in a guy like Anthony Mantha.

I'd do this move everyday from Montreal's perspective.

(Barring requiring the capspace of course)

I’m not sure Mantha is the guy you want around a young team developing an identity.

Maybe I’ve got him pegged wrong.

Mantha is in a similar position to Monahan last year...

Washington would certainly give him away, and bank the cap savings. If the idea is here's Montreal's overpaid crap for the Caps' overpaid crap, the Capitals will probably just keep the player they know.

I'm not convinced a buyout isn't the way this goes, though I'm sure they'll plumb the depths of the trade market for a taker first. Maybe someone wants him for a player making half as much, somewhere.

Proposals for guys with any more than one year left are likely dead on arrival. The idea is to get out from under bad contracts as early as possible, not to deal one mistake for a mistake with more long-term consequences. There would be zero interest in Armia and his extra year, I suspect. Keep Mantha, and it's over in 2024. Armia is a problem through 2025.

My expectation is that Mantha plays out his final year for the Caps, and continues to be rather disappointing.

most have said thru the years that mantha is lazy . ive always said ok maybe , but it pisses me off because not enough fans have taken into account motor / energy level . he may not have been born with elite athlete level heart strength or lung size which would be enabling him to keep nhl pace , and no matter how hard he trains he cant improve that aspect of his game . and if you dont have that elite nhl energy level it dont matter how big n talented you are your not going to be able to generate alot of high percentage chances .

Eller just went for a 2nd at the deadline. We arent giving picks back to take Mantha. As show by last trade deadline we dont have problems retaining salary to make a trade work. I think his value would be less before the draft/free agents but after we pay for most his contract teams will want him.

No, that's on Mantha. He did the same stuff in Detroit. He's an exceptionally skilled player with an exceptionally low drive for being great.

It's not coaching with Mantha. And if you do believe it's coaching... he needs a red ass coach, not a player's coach. When he had great stretches in Detroit, it's beacuse they rode him and pointed out how lazy he was.
