The Kings will probably slot in as the #3 in Pacific and #7 in points in the West. Chance's are they will play the #2 in the division. Obviously Doughty's return and future injuries, like all teams, may change that course.

If it plays out that way, I think ownership has no other option but to clean house, but then again who do you bring in?

Like one of my buddies who works for Florida noted after the game. You may win a game 2-1 like tonight, but you won't win a series playing that way. Maybe he was upset who knows, but as it stands, the odds are the Kings home record probably will not continue at the current click as the rest of the season plays out.

Are the Kings goof enough to make the playoffs, Yes, are they good enough to make any sort of run, No.

The bigger question I have is, will ownership accept another season where the Kings are mid pack, go out in the first round and are paying a #2 pick 6-mil for limited return.

I think it's interesting that you've come to the conclusion that the Kings will 'probably slot in as #3'. Kings are basically tied in points with both EDM and VGK....from there, they basically play the remainder of their schedule at home (after this 5 game trip) where they have the best home record in the league. Out of the past 4 years, Kings are in best position this season to get #1 or #2 spot.

I think a lot of us agree with that.

The Kings are excellent at playing one-off games vs. random opponents in the middle of the season as evidenced vs. their records vs, the East/other divisions at large, being a literal league leading team in that record. .800 vs. the Central, .667 vs the Atlantic, .650 vs the Met.

The Kings suck at playing series of games with familiar opponents, as evidenced by their playoff results and their record vs. the Pacific--.467 vs the Pacific despite the presence of 3 lottery teams, the flailing Canucks, and the TRYING to tank Flames held together by glue and Wolf.

I want to believe, I really do, but they've been showing us exactly who they are for a half-decade now.

If it plays out like that, ownership will hand Blake (or if the rumors are true and he retires, then Emerson or Bergevin) a 2 year extension and a pat on the back for a mission accomplished. What makes you think that ownership holds these guys to a higher standard than just-get-in and don’t be a lottery team? Even if they get waxed by Edmonton like most people think will happen, simply making the playoffs without Doughty half the year will be seen as an unmitigated successful season by them.

Let's apply this to what a Kings fan might have said circa 2012-2014:

"Sure your team may have beat the Kings in that 5-4 game during the regular season tonight, but you won't beat them in a series when the physicality of the Kings, and the defense and goaltending takes over."

No, not becasue it's impossible--but they don't have the horses to score 3 regularly, and they don't have the physicality to take over, or the swagger to raise their game in the playoffs, they look beaten down vs Edmonton. I DO think they have the defense and goaltending is holding but we're one sneeze away from Rittich.
