I only really bring up Ostapchuk because of how good he looked when he got some games in and his ability to play the C spot if needed. He brings a different element to the bottom-six than Crookshank would.

That being said, I think in a perfect world Ostapchuk gets more seasoning in the AHL and is the first call up in case of injury while Crookshank gets some time to prove he can be an NHL contributor.

A lot will be determined by the off-season additions and if they bring in a true winger or someone who can flip to C as needed. If they bring in a guy like Martinook for example that left side suddenly has a lot of bodies for 4 spots.

Either way, I'm excited to see what AG can do here next season, whether he starts on the 3rd line or as the 13th forward.
Ideally neither Crookshank nor Ostapchuk should be pencilled into our opening day roster; we could use the depth in the AHL in case of injury.

Chuck - Norris - Batherson <- don't sweat these lines, I'm just listing our forwards
Joseph - Stu - Giroux <- and Joseph is mentioned in trade rumors
Greig - Pinto - ??? <- this is the available spot for one of Ostapchuk, Crookshank or even Jarventie, if we don't sign any FA forward
Kelly - Kastelic - Katchouk <- not sure if Katchouk will be re-signed

It's absolutely insane the team is in a cap crunch already
Are we? Capfriendly says we've got $12M for pinto, brann, kelly, katchouk and maybe a kubalik replacement.

Seems workable unless I'm forgetting someone.

Surely it all depends on the player(s) coming back in a Chychrun trade -- which I'm assuming is a foregone conclusion. Like him or not as a player, Chychrun's cap it was not too bad for top 4 d-man.

Are we looking at improving the team?

If we are looking at a Tanev, which we apparenly are, thats likely 6 million for the Sens

Pinto is going to cost 5+/-

Another goalie is likely 4ish + whatever we have to retain on Korp/Forsberg

A vet 3rd line guy they are looking at is at least 3.5+

There is a reason they are looking to dump actual good players like Jospeh, because they don't have the room to make the additions they need/want, and he's one of the few movable pieces that teams will gladly pay a pick for without sending money back.

This has probably been mentioned, but I'm assuming there's a direct correlation between this re-signing and Smejkal going back to Europe

Sure but i wouldn't call wanting to add more guys a cap crunch, per se.

Not like that mess last year, at least.

I feel like one of Tanev, DeMelo, or Roy won't be more than $5 million if we give them term. Pinto on a 3-4 bridge for $5 million could be likely. We can always pay to move Korpisalo or Forsberg with 2nds or prospects instead of retaining.

$5 million on RD replacement
$5 million on Pinto
$4.6 million of Chychrun's and $2.75 of Forsberg's caphits towards upgrades throughout the roster.

We still have $2-3 million to play with. Not saying we'll find the ideal upgrades, but think there's room for legit upgrades.

We're only in a cap crunch because we're assuming we'll spend 5+ mil on a UFA RHD to replace Chychrun and 5+ mil on a goalie to replace one of Korpisalo or Forsberg. We're also assuming 5+ mil for Pinto rather than going for a bridge deal at a lower AAV.

It will be interesting to see how things play out with Staios making the calls this offseason.

I view Crookshank as a career AHLer, he is not quite good enough for the top six & doesn't bring enough grit for the bottom six. Ostapchuk on the other hand has the size, the grit, the smarts, defensive responsibilty, hard to play against, toughness & some scoring to be a perfect bottom six player for this team.

Ostapchuk is who I'd like to see as our 4th line C by the end of the year. Maybe even to start the year. I think he's an upgrade on Kastelic. He's a really nice prospect and I could see him moving up the lineup in the coming years.

But I'm not sure you've watched Crookshank play if you think he lacks grit. He battles and goes hard to the front of the net. A bit of a Marchand-STYLE of play. Unless of course by lack of grit you mean under 6 foot 2, which is what I suspect is going on here.

I think a third line of Crook - Pinto/Greig - Joseph would be a great checking line that can also contribute on the score sheet.
