In baseball if a player is released they get paid anyway. I thought it worked the same in hockey. They are. He's getting every penny to play hockey.

You can't just release somebody with a NHL contract. You can buy them out during the off-season window or both parties can agree to mutual termination but then the contract is ripped up and the player doesn't get any more money. In baseball if a player is released they get paid anyway. It's crazy that I have been following the league since the mid-90s and had no idea. You can't just release somebody with a NHL contract. You can buy them out during the off-season window or both parties can agree to mutual termination but then the contract is ripped up and the player doesn't get any more money.
You can terminate a contract if you have cause but being bad isn't cause.
The money is too good for him not to go to Rockford then. One way vs Two way just determines their pay structure in the minors. Regardless, he either reports to Rockford if they send him there, or he agrees to termination like DHF said and tries to find an NHL deal at a different number.
Most likely yes, but never underestimate someones pride and ego.The money is too good for him not to go to Rockford then.
Oh ya so lucky, that money should be spent on quality on the ice beside bedard to help him in his most important years of development, this management is ruining his development with this bs garbage around him, nvm we should feel lucky, positive and fortunate to have a clueless owner that throws 9 mill in the garbage. We should all be so lucky to have bosses let us light $8.5 million on fire.
Watch out. I've been saying this and now I'm considered a Wings fan......Oh ya so lucky, that money should be spent on quality in the ice beside beard to help him in his most important years of his development, this team is ruining his development with this bs garbage around him, nvm we should feel lucky, positive and fortunate to have a clueless owner that throws 9 mill in the garbage.
He cleared.
Good for the Icehogs, I guess.
If the Hawks say "Athanasiou, GTFOH, we don't want you anymore" he gets paid regardless and there's cap ramifications. In baseball if a player is released they get paid anyway. I thought it worked the same in hockey.
Once players get beyond Waiver Exempt years, they don't usually go to the AHL unless they're being jettisoned out of the League.Wow he hasn't played in the AHL since he broke into the NHL like 9 years ago. Im honestly surprised
This is what I am expecting to happen. If the Hawks say "Athanasiou, GTFOH, we don't want you anymore" he gets paid regardless and there's cap ramifications.
They’ll just have him in the minors which I guess is similarThis is what I am expecting to happen.
i think AA's game lends itself to being streaky at the nhl level. he has all the physical ability to put himself in high danger scoring positions off the rush, but he lacks the finish and playmaking ability to consistently make the most of his opportunities. the result is a consistently inconsistent and incredibly frustrating player. it's very easy to see how people can throw out the good with the bad.The man is an island unto himself. He won't make anyone better. He will score a bunch of points by himself in the AHL because he's so talented. You don't pot thirty in the NHL playing his style unless you're extremely gifted.
Pair him with Slaggert and Hayes, let them chip pucks in front of AA and AA will make AHL defenseman look like AHL defenseman. Put him on the half wall on the PP with time and space? Brett Seney will look Teuvo in comparison.
Mason RaymondAA is completely useless as a team guy. Skate fast and shoot. That’s it. That’s all he is. I cannot think of a similar player.
Raymond was a defensively sound middle six winger with nowhere near AA's raw talent.Mason Raymond
Can’t remember him defensively tbh I just felt like when they played the hawks all I remember is him being skate fast, shoot at an off angle every time he was out there.Raymond was a defensively sound middle six winger with nowhere near AA's raw talent.
AA doesn't even do that. That's my point. There's been plenty of fast north south guys that could shoot. AA is so much more talented than them all. There's no good comp because the man is a unicorn. Can’t remember him defensively tbh I just felt like when they played the hawks all I remember is him being skate fast, shoot at an off angle every time he was out there.
Not really sure I’m following based on chain to date. What do you mean he doesn’t even do that. I’d say he’s a really fast skater with good skill that doesn’t work linemates, cycle or system very well. Hence why he’s hung around league to this point with spurts of good production but never managed to secure any sort of longterm contract value. If he could be good defensively, it would have done immense value for his career.AA doesn't even do that. That's my point. There's been plenty of fast north south guys that could shoot.
