I was just watching a video about the 2003 draft. Getzlaf was ranked #5 NA player, was a big center that Habs had always needed. Anyone know why we didn’t draft him, or what the strange attraction to Kostitsyn? This was one of Timmin’s first drafts with us. Is it just one of those stupid genius moves by Timmins who seemed to like to look smart by taking the out of the box pick? I really don’t get it. I imagine talking to Kostitsyn in his interview was like watching paint dry. And, he had a medical condition to boot!?!

Kostitsyn was also seen as elite at the time, he had torched the WJC and only after it had been revealed he had epilepsy did he fall. Timmons likely thought he was getting a first line talent that fell like mailloux

Getzlaf also fell to 19th and while he hit was seen as a slow big Center who would be a middle 6 Center. Not what he eventually became. That draft also exploded because of The lockout

Timmins went crazy hard on for Kostitsyn after U18 tourny..

I wanted Parise after WJC in Halifax that year. Seabrooke was my backup if Parise gone at 10.

Labelled “hard to coach” during his Cgy junior career, which is why he dropped to mid 1st round

Timmins was trying to be smartest guy in the room w AKos

It was a stupid selection. Getzlaf was clearly the guy to select. Just like Kopitar over Price but that's another "chicane" for another day.

I still think both brothers would have ended way better if they were born a generation later.

They are prime examples of the lack of control of the off-ice side of the players that was rampant in those years.
Or if they weren't involved with the Russian gangsters of Montreal and actually took hockey seriously.

Andrei had elite skills. He had everything, except the toolbox to put it all together.

In terms of skills, other than Kovalev, he was the most skilled forward we've had since Richer.
Yeah, but the tool box! Every time I heard him speak he sounded like the prototypical dumb jock. Like Moose from the Archie comics back in the day. There is no excuse after players like Gretzky, Lemieux, etc ... super smart players with skill. You aren't going anywhere without a hockey IQ.

Man, our drafting has been so bad for 30 years. With just a few more better draft picks ... like no Kostitsy, no Fisher, no Leblanc ... like if we just drafted the player or two after all those picks, we would have had a great team.

But seeing the 2003 draft in retrospect, it seems that the person paid to predict prospects development curve SUCKED!

Getzlaf had his warts as a prospect. Was perceived as not always giving 100%. It was Jeff Carter who they would have picked if not for Andrei, presumably.

Obviously Getzlaf ended up being way better than Carter, but hindsight is 20/20.

Historical revisionism. Getzlaf was passed over by 2/3 of the league because he had huge warts he worked over.

He wasn't "clearly" the better choice at tge time. Anaheim scouts said they took a gamble.
