Seravalli: Andersson and Flames “not on the same page” for contract extension

If Calgary wants peak value he needs to go around the draft. They’ll get a possibly higher draft pick (could get mid round 1st) instead of late 1st at the deadline.

I also believe the prospect they could get this summer would be better than at the draft. If you wait, you can also risk injuries or another meh year and his value goes down a bit.

This isn’t the best of drafts though. I’d rather have a slightly lower pick next year.

If Andersson is willing to extend could see the Habs offering

pick 17 + Beck/Kapanen + Matheson (cap offsetting roster player and can play on the flames 2nd pair)

You're theoretically committing to Andersson for 9 years if you're trading for him. That's insane. He's got one year left then he'll try to sign a big 8 year deal that will almost certainly age poorly.

It's really unfortunate the NHL nixed conditional picks for re-signing players. If that was allowed, it would make him much easier to move at the draft. But with him unable to sign a new deal until a few days later, some teams may want to wait to see if they can be the ones to land Ekblad, or Dobson (via trade), although I am hoping he verbally agrees to a deal (with permission obviously) with a team at the draft.

Top 4 defenseman with size are usually effective into the 34-35 range. We can deal with years 7-9 when we get there.

On paper but you I bet this draft will have plenty of good players. There are some interesting players that are going to be available in the teens.

That’s a decent offer. I’m not sure KH is that thrilled to have to offer an 8 years contract to a guy that is going to be 30 when his new deal kicks in.

You can’t officially sign a deal but you can talk to the player to see what the ball park (term and money) would be and if said player would be interested or not to sign with the acquiring team.

I don’t think that should affect his value. Unless he says he doesn’t want to sign a new deal now (which is dumb considering he regressed a bit over his last two seasons).

Habs desperately need a veteran RHD with size and you won't be able to get everything you want unless you create a new hole in your lineup. Gotta make due with what's available.

I am not sure of Calgarys needs but if they are in need of centers I was thinking potentially a deal around

1st (either CBJ or MIN), Cole Sillinger, and maybe a mid tier prospect like Svozil. Obviously only applies if Andersson comes with an extension.

Or, we can do a 1st+Severson+LDBB type deal if Severson would waive for Calgary. It gives them a RHD replacement signed long term, a first, and a top prospect. The Severson contract is bad though.
I’d take that

Carolina fan here. I just wanted to say Andersson interests me. We could use a new 1RD.

Also, having a defenseman around Andersson's tier playing next to Slavin for the foreseeable future would be a really good pairing. That sounds exciting.

Hopefully Carolina and Calgary are talking to each other, or will soon, about a trade involving Andersson.

Carolina makes the most sense to me, and I think

to :flamesto :canes
1st in 2025 (Pick #29)D - Rasmus Andersson (50% retained)
C - Bradly Nadeau
C - Jesperi Kotkaniemi

Carolina gets a top pair RHD that is a heart and soul guy, that should fit like a glove with Slavin.
Flames get another late 1st, a good C prospect and an age appropriate reclamation project that we can buy out next years @ 33% if he doesn't show improvement.

I’d be all over that Sillinger package. Maybe Monahan could get him to sign

Not really a fan of retaining and taking on KK. Either one or the other imo

Kotkaniemi isn't a cap dump dude. His value is minimal, but he's worth something, my thinking was the retention to acquire him since less than 2.5m retained isn't worth more than a 3rd or 4th rounder.
I didn't call him a cap dump, I've said in the past I'm more than open to giving him a shot. But retaining on Andersson essentially makes his cap hit 7.1M for a year.

Also you can't compare deadline retention costs to offseason retention costs. There is a big difference between retaining on the final 20% of the season vs retaining on the full season.

I was actually using the Haula trade as a loose basis, Haula isn't a bad player, but the Devils needed that space, so they only got a 4th and an ECHLer in return, rather than his actual value which is probably a couple 3rds.

He really doesn’t fit Calgary’s window anyways. There’s no point in keeping him and hoping to be a playoff wildcard team. Shop jim. A team like Carolina would probably pay a lot for him
