The Canucks value Jake Virtanen as much (if not more) than the Islanders value Mathew Barzal, so the Canucks equivalent to the OP deal would roughly be Brandon Sutter for Mathew Barzal... Both Anders Lee & Brandon Sutter are players you'd like on your team, but not at the expense of a recently drafted player in the 1st round w/ high untapped potential.

As down as I've been on Virtanen, I wouldn't even give him up for Lee right now. Lee has had declining offensive numbers since coming into the league in 2013 (including 2 points in 14 games this year). Looking at his $3.75M cap hit for the next three years, I wouldn't give up much of value for him.

Also, Virtanen for Lee wouldn't work because the Canucks don't have cap space for him.

How about Ryan Miller for Taveres? Because that's about how much sense this makes.

A 6th overall pick just two years out of juniors, with plenty of upside for a declining veteran? Come on. Wasn't Virtanen just ranked one of the top 100 players under 21 by the hockey news?

The Canucks stink this year, if anything they need more young players with upside, not less of them. And even if the Canucks were contending, I doubt any Vancouver GM would want to risk the backlash of trading another local kid from the WHL, who's a power forward with a scoring touch, who is/maybe being misused by the coach.

After thirty years, Vancouverites are still butt-hurting over trading Cam Neely. People here were *****ing about Kassian being traded because he was a power forward, and they saw Neely 2.0 written all over him.

Imagine if the Canucks did it again with Virtanen, a local kid from the WHL, who's a power forward with a scoring touch, and may or may not be being misused by the coach, and he turned out to be anything decent. There'd be more whine produced in this city than Napa Valley. Maybe even a riot just for the sake of it. Our rioting is second to none.

They'll let him turn into Jim Sandlak before they trade him.
