An update on the 40+ beer league...
There are 8 teams in the league. This year's theme is defunct NHL franchises, so we're the Minnesota North Stars. We have matched up very well against four other teams (the Hartford Whalers, Kansas City Scouts, Montreal Maroons, and Quebec Nordiques) who are all below us in the standings. We have also done well against the Cleveland Barons, who are one point above us. But heading into last night we were winless against the top two teams: the California Golden Seals and the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies in particular had been a bad matchup for us, with enough team speed to frequently outdo our panic threshold with the puck and force a lot of mistakes, beating us 6-3 and 6-2.
Last night we faced the Rockies with an 11pm start time. A daunting task, but a vehicle for revenge that the entire team desperately wanted to take.
Despite carrying the play from the start, we couldn't seem to cash in on our early opportunities, and they caught a fluke redirection to put us down 0-1. But our intensity never dipped, we continued to get chances, and by the end of the first period we were up 3-1. It felt like it might finally be our turn.
The second period turned into a chess match, with neither team able to score. Kudos to our goaltender, who absolutely shut the door with several great saves. The game also got much chippier, with both sides able to kill the penalties from some tripping and holding calls. But we knew that the next goal would either ice the game for us...or make for a nail biter of a finish.
Over half of the third period continued to be more cat and mouse, with the bench urging our team on as the seconds ticked away. Then our forecheck eventually led to the Rockies taking another penalty. In a textbook play, we won the offensive draw back to the defenseman, who one timed it to take a 4-1 lead only two seconds into the power play. Between some good board battles and killing the clock whenever we could, we held them at bay for the last 7-8 minutes and 4-1 was the final score.
So we're still in 4th, but now we're only one point behind both the Barons and the Rockies with 3 games left, and everybody felt like a monkey was finally off our back, finding a way to beat a very tough opponent.
Things feel just a little brighter today. Bingo bango.
