Kassian should be available in the off season and you'd likely get an asset for eating the contract.

Yah this seems like an off season move for “grit”. Anaheim has the most cap in the NHL this summer. Diagnose the needs, changes, etc this summer

Kostin would probably be available. He's a good buy-low and hope for an explosion candidate. Physical with decent hands; just lost in the depth and given 4th line minutes when he does play.

I don’t see why Anaheim needs grit now with roughly 22 games remaining. Just call up someone from the AHL to fill that role. And find it in the off season.

So Zegras, Milano, Fowler, Terry and all the other young and/or undersized guys don't get run. Even with Desl, this was an issue at times. To my knowledge, there's no one in the AHL that really fits that role (maybe Drew, but I don't think he's NHL caliber with his recent switch to forward).

We’re talking like what? 20 games? There has to be a waiver player we can get to fill that role without spending assets.

Which would fit within the parameters of the discussion, because I didn't suggest we had to give up anything of value.

20 games is still about one quarter of the season. We don't need to spend the last quarter of the year with teams trying to run the young skill guys into the stands. Spend next to nothing to have an equalizer.

Or since there's never a bad time to buy low on interesting younger players - spend a later pick on a young version of Deslauriers or Carrick out there, someone who will be around beyond this year.

There's a guy with grit, who grew up cracking skulls on the mean streets of Staten Island. So nice, err "tough", they named him thrice: 1. Zach 2. Aston 3. Reese.

Better yet, he's a UFA this summer. So if you can outbid Mike Sullivan (who might forgo his salary to make sure ZAR gets re-signed) then he can be yours for nothing.

You did it!

Ducks could re-sign Des this summer. Have done that before with Derek Grant. He loved it in Anaheim and Anaheim loved him, it was just a business decision to move him at the TDL so likely won’t take it personal. Verbeek did reach out to him and the other UFAs and told him what he was doing days before the deadline. So that has to have some good faith for a potential return.

If the Ducks aren't going to be a cap team next year I wonder if they could be a landing spot for Lucic? He's got a full NMC and a big cap hit. He's still a decent bottom 6 player and a nuclear deterrent in the fighting department. He's actual money owed is under a million though.
