Confirmed Trade: [ANA/STL] Cam Fowler and 2027 4th round pick for 2027 2nd round pick and Jeremie Biakabutuka

He was in a really tough spot with the ducks and I think it wore on him mentally. He always had elite skating and has a ton of experience. He is a perfect example of how a player can benefit from a change of scenery. Keep it up Cam!
on the ducks board, @TheGoodShepard1 brought up fowler being passed over for the captaincy affecting him mentally and i also believe it was a factor in the decline in performance

not as big a factor as playing in a role not suited for him, but i don't see his it wouldn't have gotten to his head after being a mainstay on the blueline for well over a decade at that point

I can see it. He was the logical choice based on tenure and attitude but I think he just didn’t command the attention of the team and he didn’t fit the style of how Verbeek wants to play.

Just gonna leave this here... Wild what playing for a real NHL coaching staff with an actual system does for a player.

Wish we got better value for him in a trade especially now seeing him lead the Blues in points in the playoffs so far.
He’s actually set a team record for most points in a single playoff series by a defenseman, which is wild considering St. Louis has employed guys like Pronger, MacInnis, Jeff Brown, Steve Duchesne & Alex Pietrangelo.

Unfortunately he didn’t deserve more in a trade.

How he was playing in Anaheim he was a cap dump and we’re prob lucky he got a 2nd

There's probably fans of a few playoff teams who thought he was washed, who wish they'd picked him up now.

And I suspect whenever Gibson does go in a trade, it'll be much the same story ... you'll have several teams kicking themselves for missing out.
Season and playoffs are very different. There are some season players who play very well in season but shrink once playoff come around and there are players who may get lazy in season but rise up to the challenge of playoffs.

I'm not sure if you're talking only about Gibson or taking the opportunity to speak completely generally, but Fowler was outstanding in the regular season from his very first game with the Blues.

Sure but reading these posts he wasnt good in Anaheim?

I also hear people talking about LaCombe like he's a first pair guy, but in the dozen or so games I watched him play this year, he has a LOT of work defensively to reach that point for me. Not saying Fowler was good in Anaheim, but I feel a bit handcuffed to taking certain player evaluations with a big grain of salt. Context matters. In this case, at the very least, it could have more to do with the specific situation than regular season vs. playoffs.

Then again, I don't get paid like 5 million bucks to put Ryan Lindgren out on the PK to defend a one goal lead with single digits remaining in game 7. I'm far from a professional talent evaluator.

Man, what a shame his career was wasted away in Anaheim.
Not sure if this was bait, but the last 5 years doesn't equate to his career being wasted away. Look at all the deep play off runs the Ducks had. Quite an over exaggeration.

I'm happy for Cam, he's a Duck for life in my eyes, just as many fan's will view other players who end up playing for different teams. He found great circumstance that he fits into. I'm glad he's being showcased in this role and that many other fan's of different teams get to see how truly gifted he is.

The problem with Cam (especially over the course of the last 5-7 years) is that he was thrusted into a #1 role and he's not a #1 guy. He can't anchor a defensive unit. However, insulate him with 5 other good-great defenseman (St Louis model) and he can be a game changer. Happy for him but also completely aware of the reality that he was a parking cone in Anaheim and would frequently lose coverage in front of the net

I love Fowler. He had the potential to to be very special, but the Ducks threw him to the wolves and hoped for the best. Stifled his career

These two posts pretty much sum it up for me. Happy that Cam landed in a place that he fits in and in a role where his deficiencies are less evident. Wish him nothing but success.

At the same time, his time in Anaheim had expired and he was miscast in his role on the ducks. The ducks got a maximum return for him give his value at the time.
