Why would Anaheim trade a young top 4 RHD for a forward who doesn't have size and hasn't proven that he belongs permenantly in a top 6 role?

Vatanen has 2 more points in 1 more game played, as a defenseman.

I think I'd want Boston to sweeten the pot. But I have to admit, I'm not sure what the add would be.

McDonald nailed the reasons why. Vatanen hasn't been good, and he isn't exactly cheap either. The expansion is coming up, and Anaheim has Lindholm, Fowler, and Manson to protect. Vatanen isn't playing at a level that justifies protecting him over them right now. And Montour is knocking on the door. He's practically knocking the door down.

I'm not really ready to move Vatanen just yet, but I'd definitely be looking at options. He needs to step up his play, and show that he can be in a top 4 role and still push the play offensively. He's been underwhelming and he doesn't look like he put in the work in the off-season. Plenty of time, but he's been frustrating. Spooner is a place to start, but I genuinely feel that Sami can return a better player. I wouldn't want to sell low on him just because of a rough start.

I feel that the demand for RHD is high enough that you could do better than Spooner. Even considering Vatanen's current play, contract and the looming expansion draft.

Young top 4 RHD don't exactly grow on trees. Ryan Spooner types do. No offense to Spooner.

The expansion draft complicates things. The list of teams that would want to give up prime assets for Vatanen AND lose the d-man they would have protected in the expansion draft can't be very long.

That being said, with another Vatanen type in Krug, and with McAvoy on the horizon, not sure if this is what Boston would be looking for.

I think this is a bit misleading. Yes any team that acquires Vats will have to Expose another D. Doesnt mean that they're guaranteed to lose them. Teams are only going to lose 1 player. They might have a forward more likely to taken over the now exposed D. There is this sense on HF that if you get a new D it means you're going to lose 1 you already have instead. LV doesnt need 30 D. Just my 2 cents on that concern.

Agree with you there, however I think there is something to be said about D men as the best form of trade currency. Considering they have to take 30 players I could see the extra's being underperforming, high ceiling defencemen. Could be wrong but some of these extra defenders could net late round draft picks rather than taking extra forwards.

I think spooner isn't worth vatanen as a b's fan, but can't see the Bruins making him a priority to acquire given his stature.

Feel like boston would have to add a lil bit, but I think spooner could do really well in Anaheim... I feel like him and rakell would work well together.

Surprised a Ducks fan is offering this.

It is more of a lesser of 2 evils. Trading Vatanen solves our problem of losing a defensemen at the expansion draft. Spooner is a youngish forward that fits our need.

We clear 5 mil and gets to keep our 3 best defensemen.

I'm sure we could ask for more. 1st at least a 2nd. Maybe move stoner for another forward too.

I mean not the worst basis for a trade but I don't think Vatanen is the type of defenseman we would be after.

The real problem for the B's with this type of trade is the caps involved and we would need to flip a dman immediately as well. Doesn't sound like Anaheim wants or needs another one. That complicates things.
