Am I crazy to think Harpur>Mikkola for 6D?

Does anyone else feel the same?

Mikkola basically just feels like harpur but more risky and much much much bigger liability to take penalties. I never thought id utter these words but ben harpur’s game has grown on me.

Harpur might be the worst defenseman the Rangers have had taking a regular shift since the dark ages. Even Redden had at least some redeeming quality. Bickel could fight. And to allow him to wear #5... that number should have been retired a long time ago with Cook's name on the banner. It's even a slap to Girardi.

The minute Lindgren is back in the lineup Harpur should never skate another shift in a Rangers uniform.

Mikkola is way better than Harpur. Watch harpur in the defensive zone when others have the puck. Its like a game of keep away because they all know what’s going to happen if the play gets near him (nothing good)

I agree he cant move once he stops skating and gets parked but he doesnt take penalties and usually makes good simplistic plays. Mikkola is just a penalty waiting to happen

Yup. Redden was a decent PMD, but came rated as a top pairing D and was paid that way to boot. His salary was the reason he "sucked" not his play, because it meant that much less cap room for someone else.

He was a decent PMD early in his career, but his mobility started to dry up in his late 20s. He was able to hide it by feeding PP one timers over to Zdeno Chara and his 100 MPH slapshot, until he wasn't. Once Chara left, the holes in Redden's game became apparent, but the Rangers signed him on reputation anyway because they just believed "he had a down 2 years" rather than looking at the complete and utter deterioration of his overall skill in the wake of Chara's departure.

A Bickel that doesn't fight is probably the closest comp to Harpur. Maybe Justin Falk (no "u") as well.

Harpur is like one of those dudes that comes along every playoff who plays serviceable hockey that guys like Olczyck and Jones can't stop talking about but really aren't that good. Then next season he winds up with a WTF? contract because some idiot GM thought the small sample size was what he was going to get all the time.

Mikkola playing top pair minutes against the opponents' best lines will highlight some of his limitations, moreso than Harpur playing on the 3rd pair will. I think that will have people think Harpur is better.

But Mikkola on the 3rd pair is a clear upgade over Harpur. I am happy with how Harpur has played though, and has solidified himself as a good backup in case we suffer an injury down the line.

He`s already extended, two more years.

You know what I mean though, right? Like Ben Chiarot was pretty bad until the Canadiens went to the finals. Then all of the sudden he's on the list of key players and someone is throwing money at him.

I mean we signed him to basically league minimum for 2 years IIRC.

I’m fine with it. He’s a perfectly acceptable #7
