The NHL is set up to record goals, primary assists and secondary assists and only to 3 different players on a given play. A goal scorer is not eligible to receive a seconday assist on a goal he scores, even if he makes the exact pass/play a 3rd player does if they were to receive a secondary assist on that play

This has a way of distorting offensive impacts for different players. A player like Crosby can set up a play from scratch, make a give and go and score a goal and only receive 1 goal on the play. Yet in other situations a lesser player could chip it off the glass and have the other 2 linemates set up a goal and get a seconday assist. They get a boost in points from secondary assists, meanwhile a better offensive player is limited to 1 point per goal they score, even if they make the first or two passes on a goal (what would be the secondary assist). This leads to top players having only a ~20ish point lead over average players, meanwhile the true impact should be around 50 points

Basically, two plays that are identical can be awarded a different number of total points simply due to the one player scoring the goal in the end. The same play can have 3 different points (1 goal, 1 primary assist, 1 secondary) simply due to have a 3rd player involved. Meanwhile, the other play only has 2 points awarded (1 goal, 1 assist)

Wouldnt a better indicator of offensive ability to see a player able to get both a goal and a secondary assist on a player if deserved.

Developing a "chances created" metric like they have in soccer would be a much better way to go.

We're well on our way with things like corsi assists and scoring chance assists, but unfortunately much of this data has been taken out of the public sphere with the mass extinction of reputable advanced stats sites.

I'd rather eliminate secondary assists than giving someone 2 points for one goal

This. I think the KHL has this system?

As for OP, you might as well just give the guy 3 points if he scores unassisted. :sarcasm:

I've always thought a goal scored off a rebound should be recorded as an unassisted goal. How is that any different compared to player getting a follow-up dunk in basketball and the player who missed the jumper does not get credited for an assist and instead, it's just a missed shot?

NBA has one assist per point, nhls secondary assist system is incredibly distorted. It waters down the actual insight you can get from a players assist total

Imagine this. Player X and Player Y are standing in the same spot on the ice with the puck. In two different outcomes both make the exact same pass to player z, who gives it to player X for a goal. In one outcome player Y gets an assist and play gets 3 points. In another its a 2 point play (1 goal, 1 assist). So the same play results in 2 different outcomes. Which makes no sense if we use assists as a proxy for playmaking. Two players could have 40 assists a piece but one could be far and away a better playmaker due the above discrepancy. This is also not some isolated occurrences, secondary assists make up a large portion of the total points for a player

While a top player can have 75 points, their true point totals should be up around 100

what about picking up the primary and secondary assist on your goal...i really miss the days with 150-200 point players, maybe we can see a 300 point player

The KHL awards secondary assists just like the NHL.

KHL awards secondary assists, but there is one exception. If Crosby passes the puck to Malkin, Malkin then passes the puck to Kessel, Kessel back to Malkin and Malkin scores, Sid wouldn't get a secondary assist in the KHL.

Basically if the puck goes from player A to player B and back to player A, that breaks the chain, because the secondary assist technically belongs to the goalscorer.

Besides being a HORRIBLE idea this is just done to inflate superstar points even more than they already are.

Crosby earns a lot more points at home than away. People went back and looked at some of those points and he gets assists on plays he wasnt in. He isn't the only super star who gets this treatment either. STOP TRYING TO INFLATE POINT TOTALS
