The Winnipeg Jets trade Valeri Kharlamov and Russell "Dubbie" Bowie to the Red Army for Busher Jackson and Dany Heatley.

This trade addresses our lack of size issue at forward by adding 1'0" and 118 lbs. to our roster while giving up very little, if anything, in skill.

Busher Jackson is a HHOFer, and was 55th on THN's Top 100 All-time NHL Players List. He won the scoring title in 31-32 and was the runner-up in 32-33. He was a 4 time 1st all-star team member. As his strengths were his skating and stickhandling, we feel we lose very little in the trading of Kharlamov.

Dany Heatley finished 9th in league scoring with 89 points as a sophmore, and of course we hope things will only get better in the future for young Mr. Heatley. As we had little hope that the 5'6", 122 lbs. Bowie would be able earn much playing time, we feel this is a huge upgrade to our roster.

The Jets are proud to select with their last pick of the draft goalie Clint Benedict. He led the NHL in shutouts for it's first 7 years, in addition to leading the NHA for it's last 2 years. In his 18 year NHA/NHL career, he led the league in shutouts 9 times, wins 8 times and GAA 9 times.

1st Line (Jiri Holik - Alexander Maltsev - Maurice Richard): Jiri Holik, who is actually the Uncle of Bobby Holik the NHLer who has played for Hartford, New Jersey and New York is one of the best two way players in the history of international hockey. This in effect provided a foil of the other two players on the line (those being Maurice Richard and Alexander Maltsev). As everyone should know Maurice Richard is quite possibly the greatest goalscorer of all time. Alexander Maltsev essentially would be the set up man on this line, as could be seen in the 1972 Summit Series where he was the set-up man for Valery Kharlamov. Not only could Maltsev pass the puck with the greastest ease but he could also score with the best of them. In fact in 1980 during an exhibition game against the United States he was able to score while scating backwards towards the goal.

2nd Line (Valeri Kharlamov - Vladimir Petrov - Boris Mikhailov): What can one say about Kharlamov that would describe his skill level. He was able to blowpast defenders using moves which he made look easy. To quote Don Awrey (a Canadian defender in 1972) "He was fast, so hard to defend against out there,I admired the way he used to come from behind and how he kept everyone on their toes. he was simply outstanding!" Not only was Kharlamov a goalscorer, but he could pass, and he was fiesty as could be seen in him recieving the most PIM on the Soviet team in 1972. To play with Kharlamov are Vladimir Petrov a physically strong center who was one of the best passers of his time. Using this he was able to set up players such as Kharlamov and Mikhailov, and it helped him get an average of 3.4 points per game i the 1973 World Championships, a record that still stands. Boris Mikhailov is one of the best players in Soviet history, and he in effect played a very Canadian style which relied on taking the body, and forechecking. He also was one of the greatest leaders in the history of Soviet sport.

3rd Line (Vsevolod Bobrov - Sven Johansson - Anatoly Firsov): This line is what I refer to as the goalscoring line on the team. These three players are three of the greatest players for their respectibve countries with Sven Johansson actually being named the greatest Swedish player of the 20th Century. He was set to play in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, but for a variety of reasons (resentment towards Europeans, and his desire to represent Sweden in international compitions, being the main two reasons). He was a very tall man actually being 6'3 and weighing in at 208 lbs. While he was strong and not afraid to use his body he also was not as hard hitting as a Gordie Howe for instance, instead he used his body to protect the puck which allowed him to get off his hard, accurate shot which was said to always be on target. His two linemates were also two f the greatest goalscorers in the history of hockey. Vsevolod Bobrov is a player that very few people in North America know of, even though he has been discribed as the original Russian Rocket and one of the greatest Russians to ever play hockey. Proof of this could be seen in one of our other players commetns, Maurice Richard stated "Bobrov is an outstanding individual and a great player. I consider him being one of the ten best players in hockey history". Not only was Bobrov one of the greatest hockey players in the history of the sport but he also was one of the greastest Russian soccer players of all time (Sven Johansson was also a great soccer player). The last player on this line was the one who actually didn't excell at soccer but still was one of the greatest Russian hockey players of all time. Anatoli Firsov was one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of the game but his speed was remarkable. In fact it has been stated that he was actually faster than Kharlamov. To go along with this speed, Firsov was an expert passer, was able to play satisfactory defense, and had a slapshot which has been compared to the great Bobby Hull's. The only way to describe this line would be to call them the ultiment goalscoring line.

4th Line (Toe Blake - Vaclav Nedomansky - Todd Bertuzzi): This line is a line which I feel is a bruising line that can still score. Case in point can be seen in Toe Blake who was not only able to put the puck into the net as could be witnessed through his many clutch performances during the playoffs (these can be seen in his scoring the Cup winning goal in 1943, in which he scored 18 points) That may not seem impressive by todays standards but when you consider the fact that in the original 6 there were only two rounds it becomes clear that Blake was a very clutch player. In fact that year he had a 2 PPG average in the playoffs which wasn't matched until Wayne Gretzky broke the record. Not only was Blake an accomplished scorer but he could also pass the puck in an extraordinary manner (as could be seen through his helping Richard achieve 50 goals in 50 games (he scored 67 points that year)). The player who I personally feel is the finisher on this line is none other than the great Vaclav Nedomansky. In his prime Nedomansky was said to be one of the greatest Czechoslovakian players of all time. He was a big man who played the role of the powerforward who could skate, and hit, and in general make some great plays. The best weapon in his arsonal was that of his wrist shot which was clocked on numerous occasions at over 90 mile (thats right miles) per hour. Even when he was an aging player he was still putting points on the board playing in a manner similar to that of Phil Esposito where he was an unmovable object in frount of the net who could put the puck in the net. The last member to this line is none other than the now imfamous Todd Bertuzzi. While ignoring the fact that he attacked Steve Moore there should be little doubt in the fact that Bertuzzi is a world class hockey player. His ability to make room for other players is a skill that would fit in perfectly with Nedomansky giving him some extra room in the slot, and at the same time taking some of the scoring pressure off of him. Bertuzzi is an intimidating player for a reason, he has the ability to hit, and when he does he absolutely destroys his opponent. For evidence of this look at Barrett Jackman (who for some reason was picked in this draft). This allows the Red Army to have a greater physical force in it. We also feel that Tarasov would be the perfect person to get Bertuzzi into shape so that he would become a better defensive player (something that Nedomansky is underappreciated for).

Defense pairings #1 (Slava Fetisov - Valeri Vasiliev): This pairing consists of two of the best defensemen in the history of Soviet Hockey, and in hockey in general. Slava Fetisov was undeniably a great player, not only was he great offensively but at the same time he was also rock solid defensively. Positionally he was a strong player and excelled in almost every single aspect of the game. This could best be seen when he won the award for best defensemen at the World Championships (which was a showcase for the best international defensemen) at the age of 20. Valeri Vasiliev was also a great defenseman, but unlike Fetisov he didn't have the same offensive flair. In fact he was much like Scott Stevens in todays NHL where he would be able to dole out punishing body checks while playing a defensive game to perfection.

Howdy and Good evening to one and all............

I'm Pulling in an All-nighter at a Toronto Internet Cafe on Yonge street tonight..........got a busy week on the set of Ron Howard's latest movie being shot down at Maple Leaf Gardens..........I even got a couple of nights coming up working at the Second City Comedy Club doing some stand-up.......I'll let you all know the dates and times when I get it etched in stone..........All my favs are alumni of Second City and I'm hoping to follow in their footsteps...........

Earlier I mentioned that I was thinking of dropping Dino Ciccarelli from my roster at the end of this draft of ours and replacing him with someone else...........HOWEVER, I've decided that I will keep him after all cause he adds a certain element of grit and "sandpaper" to my team........we've got some great teams assembled in this draft......great job by everybody!

Thanks and Peace!~

*: incomplete stats
OML: Other Major Leagues - NHA, PCHL, WCHL/WHL and a few others whose teams could win the Stanley Cup

I am going to rate a few of these teams when I have the time and I will start off with the Calgary Flames.

Lineup.

Delvecchio - Gretzky - Neely
Shutt - Dionne - Gartner
Madden - Carbonneau - Lehtinen
C. Lemieux - Linseman - O'Reilly
Naslund

Coffey - Lapointe
Park - Howell
Murphy - Redden
Gonchar

Parent
Esposito
Giacomin

The problem I keep coming across when I look at this team involves scoring. The right wing to be completely honest is bad when it comes to offensive ability. Neely relied more on brute strength than he did on pure skill and Gartner is well he was at best a second line player throughout his career. He has some nice looking career numbers but those come from him being constantly good, but he never was great, and that can be seen through him never winning a darn thing. Lehtinen was (and still is) a good two way player but he should never be counted on to be a scorer on a team. And O'Reilly was a mucker or a grinder if you will more than someone who could put the puck in the net. He had one season where he was a point per game player, and that was on a very good team. The centers are alright, but once again lacking the depth in terms of scoring to make it a great team. Carbonneau and Linsman won't put the puck in the net, but I do understand the importance of them on the team. Left side is a bit on the small side, but there are some better offensive players that can be found in Delvecchio and Shutt. I have never been a big Lemieux fan but I can understand his being picked for a 4th line position. Madden on the other hand, I am sorry to say this but I don't think he should have been selected. I personally feel he is overrated, but he is fairly good defensively. Good speed, and hockey sense, but he lacks any hands, and he is a fairly small guy once again. Also your bottom two left wingers are transplants from different positions (Madden is a natural center, while Lemieux is a right winger).

Overall for the forwards I give them a C

I am a big fan of your defense actually. I personally would have changed the lines up a bit as right now you have your top line having two offensive players (or players who were good offensive players) and I would think that in that case you would limit one of them, in this case that player would be Lapointe who could play very well on offense. He would be forced into more of a defensive role due to Coffey (who was in all honesty a 4th forward more than anything) being his partner. I would think that Lapointe would be better paired with Park and Coffey would work better with Howell who was known for his stellar defensive play. That way you don't limit the effectiveness of either player but rather you allow their stregths to work together. Lots of good offense from the blueline, but I would change the lineup a little more and make Murphy the spare and put Gonchar on the 3rd pairing but that is just a lateral move.

Grade A-

Goaltending: The goaltending on the Flames is good, I don't think it is great, but Esposito and Parent is a solid combination. I do like the fact you selected goaltenders with different styles (Butterfly and Standup). Giacomin was a great pick also, and I thought he would go earlier as he was from everything I have read the best passing goaltender.

Overall B+

Coaching: I don't know much about his style of coaching but personally I would have picked Jacques Lemaire as a coach as in my view he would fit in like a glove with your team. Both quite defensive, and in the process allows for offensive play.

Grade B

Team overall: The problem that I see is who is going to score, it is a serious concern with team, as the goaltending is not good enough that you could count on them playing great and stopping some of the other offenses on other teams. As a result I am going to give an overall grade of a B-.

Ron Howard! I need his autograph, damn red hair gave me the nickname Opie for the first 16 years of my life. I hate the guy now.

Hope you comedy thing goes well by the way.

I was just wondering what everyone thought of my outline of the Flames team there?
Pretty good. If I was going to be picky though, and I am, I'd say you didn't give his forward corp enough credit for containing Gretzky, and maybe you could have ranked the special teams. I think that team could put out a very good and a good powerplay unit. Overall it's a good assessment.
