THN 100 Players-42The irony is that even though Bernie Geoffrion was one of the greatest players in NHL history and possessed all the qualities that fans look for in their superstars, he was always playing in the shadow of more popular players. Had he played his career with one of the other five clubs he would`ve been the star, but in Montreal he was always behind someone else in the hearts of Hab fans: first the beloved Maurice Richard (Geoffrion`s idol), then Jean Beliveau.
A strong argument could be made that Bernie was in fact Montreal`s best forward during their `56-`60 legendary dynasty. He scored more points in the playoffs during the 1950s than any other player; by a wide margin. In 1961 he became only the second player in history to score 50 goals in a season; the fans gave him a standing ovation; a sharp contrast to the boos he received when he passed Richard for the scoring title in 1955.
He was noted for several things in his playing style. First and foremost was his booming (hence the nickname "Boom Boom") slapshot which he popularized. He played the point on Montreal powerplay and terrorized many a goalie with his bullet. He had an offensive flair which came from tremondous on-ice instincts; after his first practice with the Habs, an impressed Butch Bouchard told Frank Selke "This kid can put the puck in the net". His skating style looked somewhat awkward, but any lack of natural ability was compensated for by hustle and determination. He had a fiery temper which sometimes got the better of him; one of the realities you have to accept with someone who plays with passion. Late in his career he made a comeback with the Rangers and guided what had been a chronically underachieving team to the playoffs.
Sadly, his underrated status carried over long after his playing days as Montreal didn`t get around to retiring his jersey until the 2005-06 season. He passed away the day of the ceremony.

#93 Doug Gilmour,C-5'11" 175
Drafted By:He was the best player, pound for pound his october playing weight was 170 when the season started but it would get dangerously close to 160 by the time april rolled around. Dougie epitomizes how a small man can play at such a high level in the NHL. Dougie had a ferocity about him that belies his size. He played on the edge of rules, with a little late push here, a sneaky lilttle cuff there. On his best night Gilmour could get into a emotional zone that lifted him into a class with the all time NHL elite. You would see it in his first shift, if he theres an extra push of energy in his stride and if there was then you knew he would be a pain all night long and a force to be delat with. He was one fo the few who was in the top five players in the league offensively and defensivley. Dougie needed to be hungry to thrive. He combined great vision and shifty skating to drive opponents nuts. Primarily a playmaker he needed wingers like Andreychuck or Wendel Clark to feed the puck too. When he wasn't attacking the opponents goal he was defending his own with relentless checking. He didn't just score big goals he scared the top players on every team. He was the heart and soul of Canadas team and became a national star and a beloved hockey legend.

#2 Bob Goldham,D -X4-6'2" 195
Drafted By:A great defensive d-men in Bob Goldham. A 5-time Cup winner, Bob played in 6 all-star games and was named a 2nd team all-star in '55.
It’s often said that the posts are a goaltender’s best friends. Except when Bob Goldham was on the ice, because he was truly the bosom buddy of all netminders.
A shot blocker supreme, this reliable defenseman laid down in front of more rubber than the asphalt on I-75. "Blocking shots in an art and he was the game’s best practitioner," said Detroit teammate Al Arbour, who went on to develop his own qualities as a shot blocker. "I learned the right way to do it from Bob Goldham."
-Legends of Detroit
"To this day, I can’t understand why he’s not in the Hall of Fame," former Detroit coach Jimmy Skinner said. "He was one of the best stay-at-home defensemen the game has ever seen."
-He is considered the nhl's first shot blocker.

#55 Sergei Gonchar,D-6'2"212
Drafted By:Sergei is a first round draft pick defenseman who went on to score 7 goals and 11 points in his team's playoff surge to the Stanley Cup Finals. He followed that up by being the HIGHEST-scoring NHL defenseman over the last 5 seasons combined.
The 6'2 footer NHL all-star may be inconsistent defensively but no one questions his world-class puck handling ability and rocket of a shot with the man advantage, hence his selection as the 7th d-man to be a powerplay specialist on the Tabs.
Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig has been playing with Gonchar since 1995 and he still can't figure his shot out. "He has a very deceptive shot," Kolzig says. "It's quicker and harder than it looks. He does a great job of coming in the back door on the power play and getting the pass from the forward and getting that quick shot past a goalie's blocker or glove."
"He is an elite defenseman," Bondra says. "He should be a perennial All-Star defenseman. He has all the tools."
