Great to see Milos bring it home against a very credible opponent.
Hope the body recovers well for the next round. Saw the post match interview and he was definitely going to the rule book to check a net call.

Except when native son Eubanks played, attendance was dismal in Atlanta, even through the final. Washington was nearly as bad. Wonder if the ATP is taking note.

Once 2025 happens, and Canada and the Cincy Masters both go to two week tournaments, I imagine Atlanta probably folds up shop.

Cincy might lose their tournament to Charlotte as well, as they are planning on building a huge tennis complex to better fit for the two week tournament compared to what Cincinnati offers now.

DC will last, they always draw well, and really helped by having the women there too. They also now have Mubadala as their main sponsor, so that’s big money.

Will be interesting to see what happens to the clay tournaments after Wimbledon, since most everyone will surly come for the prize money of B2B Masters going to 96 player fields.

Underway in Toronto... First time i've ever seen Galarneau play.
Me, too. And what a scare Garlaneau gave Cerundolo who he matched forehand for forehand most of the afternoon.

Bought a Centre Court afternoon ticket, but the Cerundolo/Garlaneau three-set tussle was the only Centre Court match I saw as the best match-ups were played on the cosy Grandstand court:

Hurkacz over Bublik in straight sets. What a maervelous amount of talent and skill on the court at the same time. Impressive match with the only real difference being that one player had a longer attention span and better concentration than the other player.

Monfils over Eubanks, 7-6, 6-7, 6-1. Gael turned back the clock in this power tennis showdown. He played unbelievably well, including some trademark spectacular gets on big points. Eubanks has a ton of talent but he has some technical weak spots, especially on his backhand, that he is going to have to overcome. Brilliant as the first two sets were, Chris must have ended up hitting 15 shots into the middle of the net as the errors eventually piled up.

Note: Odd thing. Eubanks looks like he hits his first serve a thousand miles an hour on TV. Surprisingly he is in the 190 to 205 kmh range most of the time with a high of 208 kmh. By contrast, Gael was consistently faster on serve with a high of 218 kmh. Go figure.

Lehecka over Nakashima, 7-6 in the third set. Jiri reverses the results of last year's Next Gen final and looked very impressive in the part of the final set that I saw.

Rain stayed away all day, if just barely. What fun.

Except for the final, I'm amazed Washington had that many sell out sessions this year. A huge number of those ticket holders came disguised as empty chairs.

What contrasting feelings. I'm absolutely thrilled for Diallo but I am immensely saddened for Felix.

Jealous of any of you fine folks going to Toronto tomorrow, the schedule is absolutely packed.

Weather permitting, in the evening session, I'm getting some of either the Murray match or the Sinner match, followed by all of the Korda match followed by Carlos/Shelton, followed by Rune/Giron. Hard to beat a session like that in the second round. I might not even see any of the Paul/Cerundolo match which is also available.

Felix is really struggling this year
After tonight, I'm thinking that Felix's injury may be a more debilitating one than we thought, more like the Thiem injury, something that dimininshes a career.. If that is true, it would be very disheartening. But with rare, very brief flashes, he had absolutely nothing tonight. No pace, no quickness, very limited court coverage, awkward hitting positions, lame-duck groundstrokes, no rhythm whatsoever--just about the works. It looks like he needs more time to recover, if that's in the cards at all, than he has given himself.

the gates opened at 5 o'clock for the evening session just as Sinner/Berrettini, meeting for the first time, got underway. Very even first set, that is, until Matteo double-faulted at deuce in the tenth game and Jannick quickly took advantage. Second set was all Sinner, whose game looks even more impressive live than it does on TV. Sinner 4 and 3.

That match ended perfectly on time so that I could rush over to Centre Court for the first point of the Alcaraz/Shelton match. What a delight. Not perfect tennis by any means, but the match got better and better as it wore on with some wondrous shot-making by both players. If Shelton can ever tame his wilder tendencies, he is going to be right up there contending for GS titles--he has raw talent to burn. But Carlos was awesome, all I could have hoped for and more. He took it in straight sets, 3 and 6.

Then the most suspenseful match, as Giron, playing rock-solid, amazingly consistent tennis knocked off a still rusty Rune in three sets. While Rune got beat, he has long stretches where he looked impressive as hell, too.

All in all, quite a wonderful trifecta of matches for this early in the tournament.

Despite this being Carlos' debut in Toroonto, the biggest story of the week so far has been Milo's Raonic. Absent from tennis for two full years because of injuries (I thought he had retired), he has returned to competition with a vengeance, looking like he has hardly missed a day. In his win over Tiafoe in which he struck 37 aces, Francis in the third set looked absolutely flummoxed, like there was nothing he could do stop Milo's. Raonic is now in the third round and a threat to go further.

The only big difference in his game is he's a bit slower and he gets tired quicker than opponents but that's not surprising. I'm glad he's back after thinking he was done. He's still working his way back so hopefully he will have a nice run in New York.

I don't think I have ever seen a player go more quickly off the boil than Davidovich Fokina, and again it starts with a stupid underhand serve. And then Ruud immediately serves to even the match

MacDonald ends Raonic's run in straight sets.

.....and saints preserve us, Alejandro takes the third set breaker off Ruud.

He could be top ten if he had a brain.

If anyone ever wants to see a perfect example of Daniil Medvedev tennis, just watch the first set of his straight-set win over Musetti today, a set of long rallies, cunning tactics and textbook technique on how to eventually break down a good backhand.

Kind of a mixed bag of quarterfinals:

MacDonald versus ADF
Medvedev versus De Minaur

Alcaraz (who was lucky to survive tonight) versus Paul
Sinner versus Monfils

Yesterday's Alcaraz/Iga matches sum up how weak today's ATP/WTA are. Both played horrendous tennis vs two fairly solid top 15 players and yet still won. No way in 2014 or 2008 or hell, even 1993 could the likes of Serena/Novak/Sharapova/Clijsters/Graf/Sampras played a match like that vs anyone else in the top 15 and gotten away with it. I definitely like the chance 1 or both lose today to Paul or Collins for sure. It seems like a week of upsets so far
