All-Purpose Stu Bickel Thread

I'll tell you what he might be bad at hockey but the boy can fight. You have to keep in mind Rupp is getting old and getting his ass handed to him more often. Asham fights but he is not what he once was, and definitely no Prust. We need Bickle on the team for those reasons alone.

If they feel they can mold him into a #6 D then so be it. I would be happy to see him become a better player. I'd be satisfied with average play with no costly mistakes. If he can play and make no mistakes that hurt us, we win.

Bickel is a pathetic excuse for a hockey player. He can't skate, he can't handle the puck, his positioning is terrible, and his hockey IQ is zero. He is not an NHL caliber player and he never will be. We don't need useless goons on this team.

I agree with pretty much all of this. The reason Bickel still has a job here is because he punches face. Sather and the Rangers have always made it a point to have a tough team. See: Brashear, Boogaard, Rupp etc. signings. Plain and simple Bickel smashes dudes and I think if it weren't for that he still wouldn't be here. What I don't understand is why Torts doesn't manage him better. Bickel should never see the ice surface against Pitt or other quick, offensively gifted teams (the **** was he dressed for the TB game last night?). Use him against PHI, NJ and BOS on the 4th line and I don't have a problem with him.

total devastation.

Why does Torts keep him in the lineup? :shakehead He's cost the team so many goals in his short tenure here. I am not exaggerating, he is the worst defenseman I've seen play for the Rangers.

Oh really? Sweet!

I've hated Bickel since Day One. Never saw anything remotely endearing about him as a defenseman.

He's not a prospect, so what's the point? He's slow, a turnover machine and takes stupid penalties early in games.

Seriously, I'm sure he's a nice guy, but get rid of him already. I can go back 30+ years with this franchise and I'm hard pressed to find a 6th dman as useless as he. He makes Jeff Bloemberg and Jan Mertzig look like Suter and Macinnis.

Honestly, I haven't seen him make any real mistakes on 4th line checking duty. As far as I'm concerned, that means he's doing an alright job. Obviously, when Kreider and Cally come back, he won't be needed there but I don't think he's a liability on the fourth line like he could sometimes be on the third d pairing.

I agree with this. His deficiencies make him look real bad when he is playing defense but as a 4th line forward, there really isn't anything positive or negative to his game. Considering our injuries so far, that isn't the worst thing in the world.

Bickel is not fast enough to be a checking forward either. He's out of position when he tries to hit players and he's not fast enough to catch up to the puck in the offensive zone. Being able to fight is just not enough these days.

I like the fact that whenever he's on the ice when someone takes liberties against one of our guys - he throws down and starts going. I like that style of his game and haven't seen anything with him being a 4th line forward that makes him a liability.

I think overall, because our 3 and 4th lines have been worse defensively compared to last year - him being 6th/7th D and not getting the normal support from the 3rd/4th forward ranks exposes him more.

I like him. But whatever.

If this is your criteria for a valuable hockey player then we might as well sign Cain Velasquez and send him off to Barbara Underhill for a summer of training and call it a day.

3:27, 5:26, 1:52, 2:18, 3:00, 14:15 (6-3 loss to the pens), 5:30

Those are his TOI each game he's played in the year from most recent to least recent. It's INSANE that we have a ten page Bickel thread with so many of you *****ing about him. He's got 35 minutes of ice time on the year and 26 PIMs. He pretty much just goes on the ice to fight at this point, and I don't get how you can knock a guy for that.

I like Bickel. He knows what his job is, he does all that's asked of him, and he doesn't ***** about it like the so many fans do about him.

While I agree that the Bickel hate is too much, his lack of ice time is telling. Since he isn't getting the minutes, someone else is getting too many and that was a killer for us last season.

I don't mind keeping him around.

I read somewhere that Torts was actually playing McDonagh, Staal, Girardi and MDZ A LOT because he was trying to accelerate their endurance.

He is the new Strudwick. He needs time to develop his game and figure out the nuances of being a defenseman but he doesn't look terrible at forward normally.

yea he's not a bad spare option cause he cal play 4th line wing and 6th D and goon it up vs division rivals BUT he should not be in there full time.

Torts better go with Gilroy over Bickel next game. Gilroy has been playing fine and getting more minutes. Eminger is a better option even if not

We all know they are going to pick up a rental by the deadline unless somehow one of these guys steps up. Next yr McIlrath will have a legit shot at that spot.

It really didn't cost us in the regular season (wher Bickel was playing 10-11 minutes a night). I'm fine with him being on the roster, getting the odd game when we need to add toughness. Come playoff time he won't be anywhere near the team, unless there's a bunch of injuries, Gilroy and Eminger both start playing worse and Sather is unable to trade for a defenseman.

Bickel's low TOI affects the whole team. It means his linemates' or D-partner's ice time is minimal as well. The 4th line or 3rd D-pair suffers.

Of course, this doesn't matter if the whole 4th line sucks. But with these new players, we may have something better. Is another forward going to double-shift so that Bick only has to play 3 minutes?

As long as it's only vs the Bs and Flyers I don't think it hurts the team at all. It's the constant high load on a few players that will cost us, not the odd game.

Who is getting too many minutes? On D we basically have two top pairings which each get top pairing minutes leaving scraps for the third anyway, and on O he's playing the fourth line, how many minutes do you want the fourth line to take away from the top three? I thought everyone was always complaining our fourth line was seeing too much time in the past?

That's a new one from Torts. What was his excuse for 100 games last season?

Riding your top-4 is nothing new. The dominant Flyer teams of the 1980s did it with Howe, McCrimmon, marsh and Crossman and they dominated the Patrick.

I dont mind Torts not playing his bottom pair much. I mind that when he plays the guys he plays, they stink, even if its just for a few shifts.

Yes because I'd want a team full of Bickels, get a grip man. I understand you hate him, I'm just saying I like that part of his game.

He definitely needs to improve in areas yes, which he probably won't given the couple of minutes he has to work with.

If you don't think a team plays a bit bigger when when they know full well that someone on their team got their back at all costs - you need to start watching non-contact hockey and call it a day. This exists at all levels of hockey from Peewee onward.

Have one on the backend, and one planted somewhere in the bottom six.

I think you pick your spots to play him or dress him as a 6th based on the opposition. I don't see him being a problem on the team but it appears he's now the next Malik for the crew that hates.

3:39 ice time last night, which leads to MDZ 24 minutes, which is way too much for him

After the way Gilroy played last night any chance of the Rangers bringing Bickel back?
