All-Purpose Prospect Thread v17.0

The expired reserve list guys are going to want to see if they can get an ELC somewhere before they go around shopping for an AHL deal (here or somewhere else). In Pharand's case, he may be interested in college now that it's an option, or otherwise potentially going back to OHL as an OA. Someone like Marcel may also consider going back to Europe.

Just remember that this is how you can have too many draft picks. Just more seems better than less but there are only so many roster spots and contracts you can have at a time. So you lose guys as a result.

I'm not crying over any of these potential losses but as more players establish themselves, we can possibly start losing guys that we draft in the 2nd round so we shouldn't cry about not getting another 2nd for Donato. It probably wouldn't have done us much good and we still have the possibility of resigning him.

Only a "problem" if you do a bad job of managing assets. Sure if Marcel or Pharand blow up somewhere it's an issue (Buffalo drafted Hagel then never signed him, the Hawks signed him on the other end of his reserve list rights expiring and look at him now), if you have your own internal scouting in order as you are keeping tabs on your draft picks, then you are really only going to be losing the ones not progressing well.

I'm not saying it's a problem. I'm saying that another 2nd round pick isn't all that valuable to us given what we already have.

We need more high quality forwards. I’d be shopping the Toronto and Florida 1sts along with a second or whatever else to jump up to a better pick.

Was it the year before I'm thinking of?

I thought there was a year where they didn't show up because they only wanted to do off ice stuff like nutrition and cooking
You're thinking of two different things.

They used to have Hawks prospects compete against each other during the offseason for evaluation purposes. They stopped that a couple of years ago and kept it to off ice activities.

They've continued to play in this tournament (or similar style tourneys) for years now. This is the Hawks prospects going up against the prospects for the Blues and Wild.

Couldn't tell you when it started, but I can remember DeBrincat scoring in (I think) each game in that tournament right before he played in the NHL. Bedard participated in 2023 and some impatient Hawks fans got worried about him because he wasn't scoring, even though the chances were there. So these are games that the Hawks prospects generally play in and, because it's usually streamed on Youtube, a nice taste of hockey before the season.

For some reason I just have no recollection of it last year

I remember it from previous years

I guess there just weren't any standouts on the roster since all our top dogs were college kids and couldn't participate

Bedard had a hat trick in the one game he played in that tourney in 2023. It was preseason where he never scored

If it helps, Nolan Allan was the captain and Del Mastro also played but the rest of the defense were guys I've never heard of. Nazar also played and was the only forward who did much of anything.

The on ice part of the prospect camp in early July stopped in 2023 and continued to be office only last year.

They’ve continued to play in the prospect tourney though, in which none of the college kids can participate.
