If the NHL thinks that Arizona is anything but salted earth, then they have another think coming. Any NHL effort in AZ is going to have to start over from scratch - literally and figuratively, because they'll need to build an arena somewhere, and because the NHL's local brand is so toxic in this market by now that the only real hockey fans are the transplants who cheer for other teams.
Arena plan finalized before Bettman, the league or any future commish will allow an NHL return to the valley. I still think it's a Suns arena multi purpose in 10 years.

Is this a plan B for turning the site Chase exists on to push the Dbacks out? and combine forces with the Suns on a shared NBA/NHL arena at the site of Chase?

Only the shadow knows

I've said before, i love the Dbacks but i'd gladly trade MLB for NHL lol

Craig Morgan went on this podcast and served up a few more details (starting around the 16:00 mark)

Biggest nugget of it is Tom Galvin had offered to help Meruelo if he had gone the county island route and got turned down. A couple of other small things in here but also lot of kicking old cans..

Tom Galvin on Brahm Resnick’s weekend show. Gives another summary as to what he wants to do and reiterates this is going to take a while (5 years).

Well...I like what he said. At the very least he gets the obvious, you need an owner and an arena or don't bother. The good news is the NHL is a very willing dance partner if he can do that. It's not Quebec City or KC, if Phoenix can get an arena built, the NHL is absolutely coming back.
