How do you know its not the other way around? Hotel tried to charge more than the negotiated after he team slept in the hotel? This goes two ways but the fact that it was settled makes it a moot and the fact that you don't give same leniency to AM and you do Barroway and his strangulation charges is odd.

Under this premise, all the other 31 teams just pay a bill that is more than the originally agreed upon amount, and AM is some white knight fighting back against this injustice. A lone crusader.

Re: Barroway, the court determined that there was not merit for the charges to be upheld.

It's less likely that multiple hotels (it wasn't just one) all overcharged the team and then banded together to get the NHL involved and force him to pay up.

It has been reported in the past, before the news of the hotels came out, that other merchants had issues getting paid by the Coyotes. Even the City of Glendale and the State of Arizona (taxes) had trouble with AM paying his bills. Why believe him over everyone else? Just because he's a billionaire?

The hotels had to go to the NHL to get paid. Glendale had to lock the team out of the arena until they paid their overdue city and state taxes. There's a pattern here being ignored in order to give AM the benefit of the doubt.

I don't know their agreements and they could potentially do this then try to get money back later. Really it is up to anyone to guess because all the sources are unverified and going off of word of mouth and taking it as truth.

To even be brought up on a strangulating charge raises eye brows, and to just push it aside without question yet hang onto a bill that was negotiated and paid is still odd to me.

Of course you can, what do you think travel sites do? Every time you ask about upgrade or discount is a form of negotiation. You may not have the buying power to get as good deals as a pro-hockey team but that is one thing you should learn in life is that there is a negotiation in every transaction.
Speaking as someone who constantly had to deal with people who agreed to a contract and who then tried to skip out on it or "renegotiate" it, f*** this take. It's codifying a complete lack of ethics and illustrating the worst impulses and tendencies of "doing business."

I'll never understand why people admire this kind of thinking and behavior. It's like eating a pile of dog shit and calling it cake.

They aren't going to overcharge the NHL. Why would you piss off a huge client like that?

Hotels are chosen based on location (in relation to the arena) and amenities.

I'm guessing here, but I'm guessing that most visiting teams stay at the same hotels and that these hotels have special "NHL team pricing," the same rates for every NHL team. If this is true that could mean that AM was trying to strong-arm an even better deal than the other 31 teams were being billed and were also paying without controversy.

Unless he was putting the players up in different hotels than the other 31 teams to begin with.

Just a reminder you need to put yourself in Alex Meruelo’s position……

- Trying to turn around a franchise that’s losing tens of millions a year.

- Those millions have to come from somewhere.

- That taking those tens of millions from other assets you spent years and millions on without hurting them.

- Then attempting to put yourself into debt for over a billion to get said franchise (losing tens of millions annually) a new home so they stop losing said tens of millions annually.

Makes an unpaid hotel bill look like arguing over lunch money.

Speaking of lunch money, when we hear stories (Petey) about an unwillingness to pay for carbs (pizza) between overtime periods during the play-in series against Nashville a couple years back....that clearly bothered the players and staff. Although the won that game on the Richie goal.

If Meruelo thinks he's going to use these same tactics to build the entertainment district, he's going to find out that Phoenix is a lot different from Nevada.

And the fact that he bit off a big chunk of misery when he bought the Coyotes is a completely separate issue from him running his business like some two bit mafioso.

I don't know if this is accurate at all but I have this vision of AM Jr being the type of guy who has like a 1000 pairs of athletic shoes that he treats like expensive dress shoes, is way into social media, and is focusing on fashion for now while he waits for his rap career to take off.

There’s whole generation that thinks just like that.

Think he’s already discovered by now most AZ politicos like their rings kissed.

Easy for you to sit at a keyboard and say that.

Maybe he had a plan that required specific things to go down and some of them didn’t.

He had 40 years worth of success until that point.
It's simple business, you are part of a franchise, the least expectations are paying your bills. Your bad decisions reflect on others so your responsibility is to tge group and not your one bad reputation.

Edit: and when you buy into hundreds of millions business and you can't pay lousy hotel bills at agreed price ..... well that's kinda all you need to know.
