Honestly, the best part of it all was every genre had its time in the sun as the hot pop sound. Country, Rock, Rap, Dance, Swing, Punk, Boy Bands, Latin, Brit Pop, etc.
I know this just missed the mark for the decade, being released in '89, but since YT recommended, it did remind me why Madonna is still the GOAT. She owned the VMAs when they still mattered:
I'm old enough to remember in the early 90s on (I'm assuming) top 40 radio, Amy Grant, Celine Dion, En Vogue, Expose, and Boyz 2 Men among others. I don't remember grunge, and I don't remember when rap was starting to take off
Interestingly I've heard stories that top-40 stations didn't really play what was considered "Black music" until about 1992. But I specifically remember En Vogue and Boyz 2 Men back then.
