Alexei Emelin

He played his best NHL hockey last year...playing his off side...so how would he be "worse" there?

He's struggling because he's just coming back from ACL surgery and his timing is a bit off has nothing to do with left or right side.

He was playing better with Gorges than with Markov.

There's obviously no exact timetable for getting one's mojo back, but knee injuries clearly take a few months. Markov looked like a ghost during the first month back with Montreal and needed another two/three months in Russia during the lockout before finally rejoining the Habs at 100%. Emelin is going through the same mish-mash of issues that every player goes through post-injury, but there's no reason to think he won't eventually regain his form as well.

The Olympics might do him a lot of good.

That would make sense to me. I'd surmise that he just needs to keep playing. However, should they be a little more conservative about his playing time? Perhaps they tried to bring him along too quickly? If he isn't playing up to scratch and is unable to go at the same speed he once owned, why expose him further -- would it not make sense to peel back and not give him as many responsibilities?

Now that he's going to the Olympics, you're raising a good point -- I'm guessing he's probably going to be used as a first-pairing guy there and on their PP. He'll have to go all out.

Wait, what? I thought everybody was generally of the opinion that Emelin was worse last year than the year before. At least, that's certainly my view.

He was good his first year, kinda iffy the next, and now looks brutal this year.

I love Emelin but honestly he is our worst defenseman right now. He looks absolutely awful out there. Should sit a few games.

Maybe it's just me, but he's became slower after the surgery.

The D is a bit of a mess right now.

Like others have said...why not this?

Markov-Subban
Emelin-Gorges
Tinordi/Beaulieu/Pateryn-Diaz

Murray is really just awful. I have no idea why he still has a roster space. I love the physical dimension he brings. That and getting in the way on the PK is absolutely all he brings though. Not only is he slow but he's bad with the puck and horrible IMO at reading the play.

I can't figure Boullion out. I'd blame it on age but I guess he was never really all that good. He's still relatively quick and shows poise with the puck at times but his brain just shuts off inside the opponents blue line.

They honestly both pretty much need to GTFO and pave the way for the future.

We're going nowhere with those guys as regulars.

The handling of the D has really been making me lose my faith in our coaching and management.

That happens almost all the time. Bad for a d-man who has to skate forward and backward and change directions very quickly.

He came back to early and was given too many minutes, too fast when he came back.

Now time for PK to go back with Markov. And Emelin to play left side with Gorges or Diaz.

Hes also not hitting as much and his shot looks worse than it did last year and he looks lost out there thats pretty much this whole thread.

Bouillon and Murray will be OK as long as we don't have BOTH at the same time in the line up, and keep their play under 15 minutes a game. Thjey will be gone in 3-4 months from now. Let the youngsters develop, win and play Playoffs hockey at AHL level,

Emelin was not good last year but people here fell in love with him because he was physical. Guy was always out of position. Gets a big deal and people wondering why he's playing like crap. He's playing like he did last year.:laugh:

great signing

Emelin's "boom" hits came from when he plays left side. You have to really adapt your game to play your off side, handedness is more important than many realise.

He's had a rough year, seems to stem from a more passive system and playing on his off side.. Everyone is hitting less its strange... He looked good on 2nd pp waive yesterday though on his first real shot on pp... We've been saying for years he should be on second waive

He did look good on the PP and overall offensively last night. Defensively he could certainly be better but he's coming along I think.

Exactly. The guy has never impressed me. Habs fans fell in love with his physicality even though he was running around in his own end. He is playing exactly like how he has always played.

Quoting and agreeing with yourself won't help your credibility.

My main problem with Emelin isn't what you'd expect it to be. What is hurting the team is his inability to hit the net when he shoots. It's creating a bunch of turnovers and takes away his use on the 2nd wave of the PP. Considering our lack of depth for that role (especially with Beaulieu still in the AHL), that is not helping the team….

I think he responded really well to Lucic trying to punish him last night. He seemed to be playing with a lot more fire than recent games. What was interesting was that he was channeling into a more offensive game. He had some pretty sweet shots on the PP!

Didn't even read who typed it. Oops

Why am I not surprised..

Anyways, my hate for Emelin has been strong this year but he did look better yesterday against the Bruins. Sometimes it takes a rivalry to get players motor running. With that said, I am sure he'll be back to his old ways moving forward.

If he played like last season, I could justify his cap hit, but he's nowhere close to it and doesn't deserve a top 6 spot this year.

Well, I put him in the same category as Eller, basically. You still see enough signs of talent that you think he should be a better player than he has been. I mean, he was awful for about 2 months after coming back from injury, and has been better in Feb and March in general (though still with some spotty performances), while Eller has had his worst stretch more lately.

But I'm not ready to give up on either of them, no matter how awful they've looked at times. They both have elements we need pretty badly.

I'd like to see Emelin on the 2nd PP wave permanently too. I'd basically like to see all of these younger players under a new coaching staff before I get too critical of them.

Is it me or has anyone else notice Emelin doesn't like to skate backwards? He's usually defending while skating forwards towards his end?

Emelin looked good on the PP last night, has good vision, strong passes and a powerful shot. Of course, he's no Francis Bouillon :sarcasm:

As for his skating he's just a few months back from a major reconstructive surgery maybe he's still holding back a bit, playing at 80% speed and mobility to ease his knee back into top condition? I hope that's the case.
