Alexei Emelin isn't getting enough credit.

When the eyes disagree look to the stats...

5-on-5 Corsi numbers for the defence last night:
  1. 74 Emelin 38.5% (+6.5% Rel)
  2. 76 Subban 36.5% (+3.2%)
  3. 55 Bouillon 36.4% (+2.4%)
  4. 79 Markov 35.8% (+2.1%)
  5. 26 Gorges 30.6% (-6.2%)
  6. 43 Weaver 25.7% (-11.9%)
Emelin had the best statistical showing, though it was close, and Weaver the worst.. but when your entire D-corps is <40% it's hard to call anyone "best" or "worst" :p:

The Corsi number for the D is secondary to the win-loss ratio of 66.7% to 33.3% (+33.4%).

Emelin has 15 hits in the 3 games vs the Bruins... Tops for Habs D. His physicality is not optional in a series like this.

Emelin is an enigma.
It's like his timing gets thrown off on occasion and bad things start happening.
Not sure if its the wrong side thing or not.
I usually start worrying when his checks aren't on point. (not catching players flush)
Once that happens he seems to start fumbling with puck. Markov always seems to catch the same bug at that point.
Then he can be totally on, punishing hits, crisp passes, and puck movement.
This is all in the same game mind you and often on consecutive shifts? :help::shakehead

yeah you're dead on. It seemed like before he was Jekyll and Hyde from game to game now it's like shift to shift. lol.

With him like most of our heavily criticized players/coaches/personnel, I think the good outweighs the bad. He's mobile and logs big minutes and most of the time comes out on top.

He and Markov remind me of the Hamrlik/Spacek pairing (didn't even think of the same nationality comparable until just now) they both looked really sloppy and downright scary at times yet somehow just seem to keep the puck out of the net.

I think if/when Emelin gets the chance to have a more mobile partner, I'm confident he'd look a lot better.

that heroic PK was something else. knocking down Chara and that diving clear. He has the heart of a lion. The sometimes poor puck decisions are heavily outweighed by his mobility, physicality and sometimes timely offense.

He made a big impact last night, literally. Lucic is spending more time bracing himself to get hit than trying to score.

Emelin has had some big plays in the playoffs. Hits, blocks, etc

He hasn't been perfect but some posters here are exaggerating his lows and are under appreciating his highs. He's looked better as he's gone on and I'm loving it!

To me, anyone who says Emelin hasn't been one of our best d-men since game 1 of the playoffs doesn't understand the complexity of what he brings to this team.

When I first came on HF in 2007, Emelin was like this mythical Russian figure...

"Wait until Emelin gets here! Wait until Emelin gets here!"

... is much of what I read on HF 5 - 7 years ago.

Well now he's here. :handclap:

Heart of a lion, indeed.

He seems to relish whacking Lucic... which is a bit crazy. :)

I'm on board with this. Sure he has some blips, but he is friggen hard to play against and that matters. I guarantee the Bruins don't want him on the ice.

PK should be able to give us 40 good minutes once he learns economy of motion.

The guys guy's a horse. Log big minutes, play the game the right way and simply crush opponents. What's not to like?

Well, he deserves his measure of credit now for that game. Awesome. But it doesn't mean what we said about some of his previous showings was wrong.

The most important thing for me is seeing him embrace and enjoy the moment.
He is clearly lovin' it Markov and his team mates are clearly lovin' him.
Boston know now they are in for a hard game 7 no matter what.
Emelin is one of the first reasons why. :handclap:

I've been very apprehensive about Bergevin's moves since day one. However, he has debunked my fears.

Desharnais - Can you blame him? The guy plays well for us and gets Patch going.

Emelin - Starting to look like a solid signing, guy looks like he could be a #4 for real now. I always thought Emelin was more of a #5-6 who was physical, and had flashes of being a #3-4. Now I realize he simply needed time back from his injury and is capable of being a real legit #4

Pacioretty Extension - It's borderline insulting to Patch how good a deal he got. This was an A+++ move by far. People can complain about Desharnais all they want, you can either have Patch at 7.5m or both of them for similar, I take both.

Galchenyuk draft - He let Timmins do his schtick, plain and simple. Got Collberg who I loved as a prospect, but lets be real, the Vanek deal is looking more and more like a steal, and if he signs him it solidifies my belief that Bergevin has the tools to go all the way.

Sorry to go a bit off topic but it relates to Emelin. If Bergevin believed in Emelin, so do I, and yes he deserves a lot more credit than he's gotten. He's been playing very well, as well as I'd expect. Considering I thought it was a crucial mistake by Bergevin originally, I'm very happy now.

Emelin isn’t without his faults, but his presence defending the middle of the ice is outstanding. Ottawa picked us apart last year cuz they had free reign coming down the middle of the ice.

Opposing players hesitate for that split second when they know he’s on the ice. Huge value.

Emelin's offensive skills are far better than he gets to show on a regular basis.
I honestly see him as the very best anchor for PK in the long run.
Not trying to get Gorges fans coming at me but...
The only way to take the next step is to upgrade.
The only way to upgrade is to no longer accept mediocrity even in its higher forms.

The old Emelin finally returned in full force for the entire game. Hitting everything that moved he was awesome. Hope his confidence is back he seemed to shy away from hitting when he came back from his knee injury, guess he's not worried about it any more. Hope he continues this level of play for game 7! Go Habs Go
