I watched the entire game again. Emelin is a defensive juggernaut. He saved our bacon countless times and really frustrated the Bruins forwards. He feeds off of Milan Lucic's tears and is everything we expected him to be; 6'2 220 pounds of Russian meat who uses his body and isn't afraid of anything. He's matured so much and can be trusted in almost every situation (We've seen some flashes of offensive talent).

Crazy how he hasn't lost a step since his injury. Hes playing top 4 minutes and MT loves to use him.

Strange time for this thread.

He was pretty bad last night.

He did really turn his season around though. He was ****ing terrible for a few months. Like ECHL quality, but he started playing really well down the stretch and even against Tampa.

Imho he was the best after Subban.
 
I thought Emelin was better than people are giving credit for. At one point didn't he stop 2 chances right in front of the net?

Blocked a shot I believe, had an injured hand according to CBC. Left and came back.

I think he can be better but I thought he was effective at different points of the game.
 
Emelin is great at times, but too many brain farts. Him and Markov scare me. Markov has the brains but not the legs and Emelin has the physical attributes but his decision making is not that good.

I thought he had a few rough patches, but so did the whole team at different points. I thought he also had some good moments. Him and Markov usually get Krejci's line so it's a tough matchup to begin with. He also had a few good moments and was physical, took hits to make plays. He was more an asset than a liability overall.

The team as a whole needs to be a lot better in terms of positioning, awareness and coverage defensively. Boston is more skilled than TB, but against TB we took away their time and space in the defensive zone. Last time Boston has wayyy too much time and space.
 
Emelin was bad last night, but it still was bad in the context of being an acceptable top-4 option in general. And it was his worst in a while. Earlier in the season was far worse for him. But he has been good for the last couple months, so I think we can overlook one game. It helps so much to have Gorges back and one pretty reliable bottom pairing guy in Weaver. I don't think Emelin deserves any especial credit relative to any of those guys, though. He's doing ok. I expect he'll be better next game.
 
It was a very Jekyll and Hyde performance from him, made some poor errors but he also bailed us out and saved a couple of certain goals.
 
Fix your thread title, it should be Weaver, not Emelin.

Emelin has been playing good hockey and I would label him as a definite #4 D now, but last night he was just alright.

The guy that is playing incredible is Mike Weaver. That man is blocking shots like no tomorrow and is playing great defensive hockey. He is playing the same way Gorges did in 2010 with Hal Gill. Plus, Weaver can skate well and move the puck out of the zone. He's awesome.

Subban-Markov-Emelin-Gorges-Weaver all playing decent hockey right now. That's a solid D lineup 1 through 5. And even though I hate Bouillon he has been fine in these playoffs and actually scored a big goal last night. So he's alright as a #6. If not we have Murray and Tinner anyway.
 
Disagree. I think Emelin has struggled with his defensive duties. Often gets beat, bad positioning. Versus TB all he did was ice the puck.
He can have good stretches, but imo he should be on a bottom pair.

Its a resume but i could have gotten into it. But this is an Emelin praising thread so i don't see why i'd write up a dozen lines in order to analyse his "bad" play. I've already done so in the PGT.

He brings a lot more than "experts" give him credit for. He is a Warrior out there, plays tough hockey. We need this guy and I am happy he is part of our defense.

Not his best game last night but he had a few great blocks on and stick checks. He's been playing like a legit #4 D for a few months now. Nice to see since he was pretty awful after returning from injury. He's showing that he doesn't need to be a wrecking ball to bring value. Some good flashes with the puck too. In think in game 4 vs Tampa he had a pretty slick end to end rush blowing past 2-3 players along boards.

Facing tough minutes in his 2nd full season is easier said than done.

Completely disagree. Emelin was great last night save for his one gaffe turnover in OT. He made some huge, huge plays blocking shots and clearing the net.

Maybe it's just me, but I was pleased with how he played overall.

I could see the argument for decent, but not great.
 
Meh. You never know what you get with Emelin. He's either terrible, or good.

His skating prowess seems to fluctuate on a game to game basis.

He's a decent #4, but I'd rather have him on the third pair. He's just not all that reliable to me. Still think Bergevin overpaid him. He's a good shot blocker, though.
 
You take the good with the bad with Emelin, if he didn't have as many stupid moments his name would be Kronwall. He'll bail you out just like he might put you in hot water. I think a large part of it is communication, or lack thereof. And I think anyone saying he's terrible really isn't watching him closely and is just noticing the bad that usually comes once a game.


Anyway, he's a number 4 guy, if he was perfect he'd be a top pairing D-man.

5-on-5 Corsi numbers for the defence last night:
  1. 74 Emelin 38.5% (+6.5% Rel)
  2. 76 Subban 36.5% (+3.2%)
  3. 55 Bouillon 36.4% (+2.4%)
  4. 79 Markov 35.8% (+2.1%)
  5. 26 Gorges 30.6% (-6.2%)
  6. 43 Weaver 25.7% (-11.9%)
Emelin had the best statistical showing, though it was close, and Weaver the worst.. but when your entire D-corps is <40% it's hard to call anyone "best" or "worst" :p:
