Addition by subtraction with Barron gone. Soft player, lots of talent, may well succeed in a place where there’s less spotlight. He certainly has a scoring touch when he’s not coughing the puck up and cowering from any form of physical contact. I think Nashville will be good for him, he won’t have 20 thousand rabid fans wanting his head there.

Carrier seems to be a steady on, young veteran that should solidify the right side. Not a big guy, but doesn’t shy from contact. An actual right hand shot defender that can skate and play in the top 4 was sorely needed. The fact that he’s a “pure Laine” is an added bonus for the l’Antichambre crew.

Seems like a good move for both teams.

I really like Struble. I think he’s going to have a long career in the NHL. But I don’t see how he stays with us.

Guhle and Hutson are 1/2 on the left. Then there’s Struble and X. If I had to choose I’d go with X. Hate losing Struble but I just don’t see where he fits.
I expect Struble plays on either side on the 3d pairing or as 7th. Until Savard is moved, he'll be a healthy scratch more often than not, if the D is otherwise healthy.

I think there's room to develop Struble as a complementary defender, a bit like Chiarot at his best.

Carrier actually makes the Lehkonen trade look better.
Aside from picking in the first round. Barron has been very inconsistent and lost especially in the defensive zone.

Michael Hage and Alex Carrier for Lehkonen
Not quite, it's Hage and Carrier for Lehkonen and renting out Monahan (which got us the #26 pick)

--------------

I'm not against moving the possible longer-term potential in Barron for some short-term stability in Carrier, but overall this shows we didn't get a great return on Lehkonen. That's ok - when you trade for picks and prospects, you'll get hits and misses.

Kulak for Hutson is an insane win, if we look at it piece by piece, but I'd rather look at the rebuild as a whole.

Meh player for meh player.

I actually hate the trade.
,,,

5"11 is small for a dmen who cant really produce offensively. Dont think either Barron or Carrier will have in impact a meh for meh kind of trade.

A 5th - 6th defenceman, -14 on the worst NHL team this season... yikes

That's pretty terrible if you ask me...

This Carrier dude looks like a worst version of Josh Gorges

another smurf, nevermind

Don’t like this trade. We need more big punishing dmen not another smurf that can’t handle physicality

And we also take on a lot more salary

really disappointed and confused

Barron would have been drafted 1st overall…
If scouts focused more on neck length.

5ft11 Dman, will work really well for us in the playoffs and help in clearing the crease.

Helping to add much needed size to our blueline, especially with Hutson being such an integral part of our core for the next decade+

Oh, and most importantly, he's un petit gars de chez nous. No doubt Chantal is super pleased with this acquisition.

We turned 5ft11 Lehkonen into a 5ft11 Dman with much less skill who is just about the same age.

This is another Kent Hughes masterclass.

Habs fans, rejoice!

This is a stop gap move to help stabalize the D on the right side with some veteran help. We had too much of the same thing with offensive Dmen in Barron, Hutson, Matheson and Mailloux. Carrier is much better at defending than Barron is, and also buys time for Reinbacher and Mailloux etc to season in the AHL, and perhaps open options to move Matheson down the line.

Who knows if Carrier will even be here when we're legit playoff contenders anyway.

It's disappointing Barron couldn't elevate his game as hoped, he had all the tools you'd look for.

It's nothing to rejoice over, but a necessary move imo. The D clearly needs help.

From what I have seen from the highlights, he seems to have much more hockey sense than Barron and he is a very good defensive defenceman which has been an issue in our zone.

We could have claimed Dante Fabbro for free, but we trade away Barron to get basically the same quality player. This is a bad asset management from Hughes.

It’s the sort of acquisition I was clamouring for some weeks ago: an improvement at the margins which would have a disproportionately positive impact and help stop the bleeding. I said Hughes was sitting on his hands while things were slipping away and out of control.

Not claiming Fabbro was likely part of Hughes’ patience with/faith in Barron and his fellow defenders.

Since that time, not much has improved on an individual basis but the results got slightly better. So Hughes calls a mulligan and makes the marginal improvement in order to see if things can improve even more. We have a tough month ahead of us, anyway.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure it’s a particularly good acquisition on account of Carrier’s contract conditions but it’s clear the Habs liked him from before and sought him out in this case. Another setback is that we’ve helped give NSH cap space and their tank campaign (should they go full bore)… this is a direct tank opponent… on the other hand NSH invested a lot in their UFAs and could be using this trade in the same way: to shake things up and see if the rosters nuts up after a change.

I’m not sure what the best outcome is — obviously we want Carrier to do well and better than Barron — but do we prefer tanking or are we aiming to be a difficult opponent and “mix” it up? I think Hughes prefers the latter.

Just waking up to this. Very surprised that Habs pulled this off. I was a defender of Barron but I really don't like how his season went this year. His confidence is shot. He may be able to build a career like a Mike Reilly but solid work by HuGo

Whatever. Barron isn't going to be a top 4 and Mailloux has more tools than him. Only so much time we can give guys to improve even marginally.

Meh trade but should facilitate a Savard deal.

This isn't a move to get them "in the mix", just needed experience on the blueline when Savard is inevitably traded.

Barron ain't that guy.
