As many have said, this is an evaluation year. We have young players coming up and they’re probably stack ranking all these guys.

We needed veteran help and they probably figured that Baron was lesser than RB and Mailloux. And if that’s the case then it makes sense to move on from him.

People here seem to like Carriere… great, I don’t know anything about him. I’d have liked some size though. Not even six feet…
Not long time ago, Habs had Kovacevic on a cheap contract.

He had motor. I liked that about him. Maybe not the most skilled guy but he had heart.

When I look at a player like Joshua Roy, I wish he had more of that. Great skill, cerebral player but he leaves me wanting more. It was his job to lose and he played far too passively. I get that’s his style but he needs to show MORE. Lek may not have had Roy’s talent but he had some and he brought energy. That’s why he was successful on Colorado.

I don't find Roy to be that skilled. His skating is not at all at the level a skilled players needs it to be for one. I'm not even talking about footspeed, but also how he doesn't use crossovers in the neutral zone properly or cutbacks in the offensive zone. It makes no sense that someone who wants to be productive hasn't worked on these things. The other thing is he doesn't really convert on skilled plays. He finds the open player and he has decent hands, but you're looking for a way higher conversion rate for someone who wants to play top 6. Add the lack of motor and he doesn't look like an NHLer at this point. He has a lot to work on.

Good trade for us.

For those of you who wanted to be in the mix, he will help.

Not sure what this means for Strubble
I really like Struble. I think he’s going to have a long career in the NHL. But I don’t see how he stays with us.

Guhle and Hutson are 1/2 on the left. Then there’s Struble and X. If I had to choose I’d go with X. Hate losing Struble but I just don’t see where he fits.

Watching him in Halifax, I really wanted Barron to succeed but it was clear he was regressing here and was going to be leap frogged next season (maybe even this one if Reinbacher didn't get hurt). He has offensive instincts but is too soft and makes questionable plays in the defensive end. Carrier brings needed stability and experience to a pretty young d core, especially if Savard is going to be traded.

One thing about Lehkonen was that he was the only one who didn't fade to nothing when Douche Arm was the coach.

I like the idea of him becoming Guhle's partner this year and then maybe shifting down to play with Xhekaj as we hopefully add to the top 4 on the right.

Justin Barron and Dante Fabbro are similar players. Carrier has similar counting stats but can actually defend.
I hope he can defend. His contract is at 3.75m for the next 2 years. We will see how he play with us.

Who knows if Barron will pick things back up but one thing I wasn't a fan of was how Bergevin never knew when to move on from players who were stalling or regressing in their development till it was too late. I think back to the returns we got for Pateryn, Tinordi and Beaulieu compared to the value they had earlier on in their careers.

Barron was heading that way I believe and would rather get something of value now than if we waited and he kept regressing.

Still young. Can use the season in the AHL.

But the skill is there. Great hands, nice shot. Luc Robitaille stylistically. But you’re right he needs to show more.

He’s another guy I could see us moving on from. He flunked not once but twice. They may have lost some faith in him.

This is a good point about Reinbacher. I found he was already better in Laval last year. With the way he looked stronger and faster this year, I think it was a matter of time before he leapt ahead of Mailloux and Barron. That injury really derailed all of that.

He did not. A disappointment for sure. But he also didn’t get much ice and we’re a mess on the right side. Maybe he can turn it around in Nashville.

I dont disagree but devils advocate is, he also didnt seize the opportunity even though MTL has been light on RD

I hope he succeeds but he just doesnt seem to have the mentality of a hockey player

Bad choices were made. Kovacevic, to me, was a much better D-men than Harris, Barron and to a lesser extend Struble. With all the young D-men, the stability he brought was much more valuable according to me than to let him go to test out how the younglings could do without their floaters in the big pool.
One of the biggest weaknesses of this management group is their obsession with not blocking their young players from having room in the roster in the future. If you believe in your own ability to pick up good vets, those players should be trade able afterwards when said prospects are ready. Let them marinate in the AHL, just look at Dallas, that's how you do it.

That was not the trade though.

The trade was Lehkonen for Barron and 2024 2nd.

If you do the trade tree, it's now Lehkonen for Alexandre Carrier+moving up for Hage.

With how Hage has been performing, he might eclipse Lehkonen, Barron, Carrier.

I thought we traded our other 1st to move up Hage?

Yep. I didn’t see any real improvement.

It’s very early on to give up on him. But like I said in an earlier post, they’re stackranking guys and he’s probably third on the pole. Not only that, we badly need some help on the right side.

The move makes sense. I’d have preferred a big physical guy there but if Carriere is steady then I guess that’s good enough. We badly needed help on the right side. If for no other reason that it can provide some shelter for our younger players.

I really hope Matheson is next. Time to move on.

Honestly, I hate to read : " Justin Barron was our next Jeff Petry"....
Just a little remember... I lived in Calgary at that time. I watched many oilers game. He was pairing on the first pairing playing on a shitshow in Edmonton. He was -45 but every player was playing like shit. If you watched the games, you could see that Petry was skilled . He was on first pair every night.
On eye test He was better than , klefbom, nikitin, ference, fayne etc.
Is Barron better than Hutson, Matheson, Guhle??
It's like saying Hutson isnt that good cause we are at the bottom of the standings aNd he is -14.
Right now, would you like to watch Justin Barron playing 24 minutes on our first pair like Petry was back in the days in Edmonton? That would be the worst thing it could happen. A nightmare.
And I think Petry didnt wanted to stay in Edmonton at that time, that why we had cheaper. Oilers fans were angry to see him leaving Edmonton.
So please, lets stop. "Justin Barron is our next Jeff Petry"

Jeff Petry was 27 years old when he left Edmonton though. He had 35 total games as a 23 year old and Barron’s already past 100 and just turned 23.

Barron didn’t look good here. That’s true. But he was played sporadically. We needed immediate help and I get why we made the move, but his career hasn’t even begun yet. We won’t know what we have up until a few years from now at least.

Savard is pretty much a goner, especially now. As I posted earlier in this thread, I've wanted Carrier for a while as someone who can replace Savard when he gets traded. Because as much as we can rag on him, if Savard is gone and no one is there to replace him, we'll realize how much we'll miss him.

With Carrier there now, and still under contract for another 2 years after, we have someone. Also, he's 6 years younger than Savard.
And about 100 pounds lighter.

At 23 years old. Jeff Petry was already playing on a first pair, wich Barron is far from. I watched him closely during I was living in Calgary. True he been trade at 27 years old. But he was their best dman since a long time ago. (Even if their team was shit). He wasnt the worst player at all).

edit: as for him being an ex-Quartexx client, it makes him a known quantity to management.
Yeah, Carrier is a known quantity.

Like Hughes and Bobrov were known quantities to Gorton. The same Bobrov who had us, a team that has been starving to grow an offensive star for decades, pass on Michkov.

Like our peewee coach St. Louis was a known quantity to Hughes. Same for Newhook, who sucks ass at everything except looking like a Wish dot com version of Colin Farrell. Or Vinny Lecavalier, who seems to be paid for golfing.

Maybe Vinny worked today, tho. Because today, we acquired Carrier. A player represented by who? Agent Phil Lecavalier. He's a known quantity to Vincent. He's his brother.

Perhaps next season we'll hire Kent Hughes' 2nd cousin as a conditioning trainer and Gorton's nephew, who cooks a mean lasagna, as the team's chef.
