I can't help but feel like we got lucky as hell to land such a pick in such a fantastic draft, and then we got absolutely hosed more than just about any team ever when in the '04-'05 season, the strike destroyed our route to Crosby and a top pick, and instead we got a late mid 1st, when instead of using the prior season's records, they used an aggregate of multiple seasons, this occurring when we were absolutely locked in to being a bottom 1-5 team in the league in the months after drafting Ovy. That, more then anything, is why he only got 1 Stanely Cup in 20 years. I will never not be bitter about that screw job.
Admittedly only 2 of the top 5 guys hit in that draft, Jack Johnson had a weird, kinda disappointing career, but man, we were making a beeline for Crosby in that draft, probably could have used Price as well, maybe we get lucky, maybe we don't, looks like 4 all stars in the top 12, and a bunch of meh beyond that, but man, I was so so so so damn bitter when we finally decided to tank in 2003, and then got just hosed x10,000 with the '05 draft class. How different might things have been? No Crosby to the Penguins (even if he doesn't go to us), maybe we get one of the stars?
Yep, I'm ecstatic at the luck above, it's brought a great deal of joy after nothing but misery '82-'04 for me as a fan (and unfortunately, '04-'17 too), but I am too bitter to ever completely get over us being totally and completely screwed by that strike and ensuing utter bull---- lottery system they employed to gift the Penguins yet another superstar (and another shortly thereafter).
