Player Discussion Alexander Ovechkin (Vol. 4)

I didn’t read it that way. He was offered to make a comment first by Bettman during the ceremony, but he declined the offer in favor of giving Ovi the spot light.

Also Wayne might have an alcohol problem, dude looks so out of it half the time now.

I admire Gretzky for doing the class act thing like Howe did. That is a great tradition that should stand.

I think Gretzky is struggling with it more than he's let on. In their joint presser Friday, Wayne abruptly got up and left after Ovie was asked like 5 questions in a row. I think he was pissed that the media wanted Ovie to talk and they weren't actually much interested in Gretzky. Based on how his life has been, that may have been a little different from what he's used to.

Yeah, I think even Ovie himself is tired of the attention surrounding the record. They both seem relieved to have it done

I was thinking about the next player who eventually attempts to track down Gretzky and Ovechkin.

Getting to 801 isn't the toughest part although it is tough. Once you get there though, it's a long, long drive on a desolate highway to get to Hotel 894. It took Ovechkin parts of 3 different seasons to get there.

Then once you get there, you'll have to refuel and get to your final destination wherever Ovechkin decides to build his hotel in the desert.

Have fun.

That’s not how I interpret it. The “press-guy” actually announced that the next question would be the last one for Wayne and then it got directed to Ovie anyway, so Wayne added a joke and then he excused himself.

But I also think he is struggling with it, how could you not at least to some extent? I know I would if I was in his shoes, legacy is important and his is a smudge less shining.

His wife was crying, so I assume she knew this hurt a little bit as #99…

Who’s the kid speaking Russian to him?

Everything AO does these days is classy. The man knows his status, he should be extremely comfortable with who he is, and what’s he’s done.

Living Legend. Period End

He made that joke towards the end of Friday’s presser, “well, he hasn’t actually broken it yet. Could you just let me enjoy it for 24 more hours?! Hehehe”

And no one laughed, and it was awkward. It was a good natured joke, but still felt strange and out of place for the moment in DC. Felt like a bit of his true feelings shining through.

Regardless, he still has the most pts ever, and no one’s coming for that (and all his other records). I imagine he’ll live.

Hard to believe he came into the league when I was 6. Went through every school grade looking forward to going home to see what incredible thing Ovi would do next. Every teammate I had throughout the years wanted to be like O. His pure enjoyment of the game inspired so many kids. So grateful to have seen his entire career unfold and where he is now
