Player Discussion Alexander Ovechkin (Vol. 4)

Great goal scorer even. Now it can’t be argued although some will try. To score at his pace for so many years is just wow! Congrats to the Great 8!

Love how he shouted out the team for his success. Specifically Oshie and Backstrom who were in the box.

Reminds me of Mariano Rivera--the batters always knew what pitch he was gonna throw, but he was so great, they still couldn't hit it. Same with Ovi's office. Inevitable. Congrats.

As a kid, I regularly saw guys like Lemieux come to town and shine vs the Caps. And I wished that we’d have our own superstar someday.

We got not just that, but an all-time great. And not just that, but THE greatest goal scorer of all time.

The kid version of myself would never have believed this was possible. What a pleasure it’s been to watch his career for 20 years. He made hockey cool in the DMV, and finally brought us a Cup.

Congrats Ovi, arguably the greatest athlete in DC sports history.

Too many pages to review, so its likely been said.
The injury this season probable cost Ovi another 50G season, and very likely #2 this season to
Draisaitl 😲
What's remarkable, besides playing like he is at 39+, is all the games he's missed in his career non-injury related, and still broke Wayne's record - and in a generally lower scoring era !
Last, if he didn't miss those games to various play stoppages... he'd have a good chance to reach 1,000 goals !!

It's been a privilege to be in NVA and see him play over the past two decades.
LEGEND

I was originally a massive basketball fan as a kid, but Ovi was so good and so cool and led a DC team to heights that no other franchise has even gotten close to in my lifetime that I fully converted and picked up skates myself. Hockey -- both playing and watching -- has become my number one passion because of him. I will never forget the Cup win and I will never forget this moment either.

All the props to Ovy. NHL labour stoppages removed 82 and 34 games from him. 12/13 he was scoring at a .67 gpg so had he kept that up in the extra 34 that’s 22 goals. Plus whatever he could have had as a recently 19 year old rookie. Probably about 60 or so in total for those 116 games. He’d be in around 955 or so now. Maybe at 960.

Covid that was 13 and 26 for 39 games. But not as much in the NHL’s control.

The fact Ovy missed like 50 games only due to injury over his career is insane given how he liked to hit. He had some suspensions and rest days too plus Covid as well.

Congratulations, gentlemen. From the bottom of my heart as a Devils fan. It was unpleasant to see Alexander scoring against us all these years, but it was so joyful to watch him at the same time. Every goal for the last couple of years has been greeted as if it were one of their own by fans of different teams in Russia.
Happy holiday!

Thanks!

I find it funny (not in a good way) that ESPN's website, who is one of the two major rights holders for NHL hockey in the US, has Ovie breaking the goal record behind two women's college basketball stories, an MLB story, an NCAA gymnastics story, a story on Messi, and a UFC story from yesterday.

Was it just me, or did Ted seem upset the whole ceremony? I know Wayne butchered his last name- "Mr. Leonis" - but I didn’t think that alone was enough to set him off.

I see 3 women’s ncaa articles related to the Final ahead of his story at #4 in top headlines. The women just wrapped a championship. I see no disrespect.

That was f’ing brutal to screw that up, but I swear Gretz looked out of it to me. Like he’s aged 15 years in 5 cognitively.

Calling billionaires "Mr. so-and-so" while calling everyone else by their names just seems gross to me.

But yeah, Gretzky butchering his name was a little off. Forgivable though - people mispronounce things all the time.

I didn’t read it that way. He was offered to make a comment first by Bettman during the ceremony, but he declined the offer in favor of giving Ovi the spot light.

Also Wayne might have an alcohol problem, dude looks so out of it half the time now.
