Player Discussion Alexander Ovechkin (Vol. 4)

Was rated a 9.0A on the old site (Yeah, I'm getting old)

10 - Generational talent -- a player for the ages, one who can do things with a puck that no other player would even contemplate doing. Very, very few players will be deserving of this rating, probably one per decade. Think Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, maybe Sidney Crosby, but we'll see.

9 - Elite forward / defenseman / goaltender -- possesses the potential for greatness, a perennial All-Star throughout his career. Think Joe Sakic, Jeremy Roenick, Niklas Lidstrom, Rob Blake, Dominik Hasek, Martin Brodeur.

A - All but guaranteed to reach potential - 100 percent metaphysical certitude that the player will play up to his abilities as noted by his potential rating. In this case, the potential rating is multiplied by 100 percent for depth chart purposes, signaling that the player is a lock to reach his given potential.

As a Caps fan the winning the SC is the top thing period but secondary is seeing some historical successes by the great capitals players. Congrats to you, Ovie. I still have the Hockey News future watch when you were 15 years old talking about a Russian phenom that didn't play like a Russian but more like a Canadian. As a fan of Russian players when they first started coming over in the very late 80s and early 90s this was super intriguing as a NHL draftnik. In the last hour before the '04 NHL draft I still recall the feeling the caps would win that draft and they did. It is surreal watching 95% of the games in his career it is a weird thing to have lived through his entire career.

I believe him, yo!

I’m kinda surprised at how much the boys are celebrating the tying goal. Thought they’d save it for the 895.

But maybe they just want to party twice.

I don’t think they could contain their excitement! The boys looked happier than Ovi himself, they all want to be part of this moment.

It is very hard to imagine him not breaking the record on Long Island.

That said, I really want him to do this at home.
I view it as a win-win. He does it tomorrow it’s done, the weight is off, and since it’s a day game they have all day/night to party haha. They’d even have multiple days before the next game to dry out. If he doesn’t do it he gets a chance to do it at home later in the week.

Used to gripe at the haters on X "Putin's puppet", etc, etc but now it's just block, block, block. Not worth it for folks that can't recognize the athletic achievement. Take the record for your own tomorrow, Alex!

One of my biggest fears was that he was going to limp to 895 at age 42 as a huge team liability.

It is awesome to see him tying and likely breaking the record while scoring 40+ goals as a major contributor to a team vying for the President's Trophy. Dream season for Ovie and the Capitals.

Only sad part is that this is the peak of sports fandom and can only really go downhill from here.

There’s a good chance he shows up DSP sized next training camp lmao

Eh. There's always a tinge of that during historical achievements. But there are always lesser developments and team developments that can get pretty close...

With his production this season it's going to be very difficult if he sticks to next season being his last. The farewell tours? Not ready for that. Not at all. A long way to go before that, though with their recent form one wonders if they're going to have enough structure to put together a deep playoff run this spring. Either way I think I'd gladly watch him play a 3LW/PP type role for an extra year or two or however long he wants to be around the game. I guess he won't linger with it like some if he can't hack it to his standards but if he really wanted to get to 1000? Is there any doubt he could do it? Hard to believe any human would have what it takes to top that barring significant future rule changes.

Also on the going it at home or doing it on the road thing, I don’t feel any worse about the cup win because it was in Vegas. No matter where or when he does it it’s going to be awesome.
