News: Alexander Ovechkin to Sign with Dynamo Moscow KHL for 2026-2027

I mean, at this point he gave it all to Washington and will be the proud owner of one of the most coveted ice hockey records ever

The man has 10000% earned the right to end his career in whatever way he wants
You actually make a good point

Wonder if he comes play for the Capitals for the playoffs come after he likely wins a Gagarin Cup.
Olli asked you twice if that is allowed,

He may well not break the all time regular season goal record. With 16 games to go it will be as tight as the Atlantic wild card race, should make it interesting.

Makes sense, he doesn't want to work out all year long to play in the NHL at that age. I bet he plays in the KHL at around 260lbs

If he stays, it would certainly be legendary for him to reach 1000g. What a legend!

I don't think it is, but I was making a bit of a sarcastic joke. I mean, they could sign him and put him on LTIR until his KHL season is over.

I know Radulov did it with Nashville minus the LTIR thing.

Radulov had a suspended contract because he left before the end of his ELC.

I believe the NHL and KHL now have an handshakr agreement to somewhat honor each other contract to avoid these situations.

Wouldn't work with LTIR, as it is for injuries and if he plays in the KHL, he's not injured.

NHL goals record that won't be touched for a long long time, got his cup, multiple awards, rich AF, makes total sense to go home for a year or two and make a shit load of money and being worshipped over there.

Regardless of politics agreed. Get interviewed in your language and get to play in front of your country instead of being a foreigner. It makes sense.

I saw an interview with him this summer where he said it’s becoming increasingly hard and annoying for him to get to the pre season camp and work out to get into shape, so it seems that hockey life style has become not as enjoyable for him anymore, it’s actually incredible he’s playing this well nowadays
This isn’t surprising. It’s not unusual over the last ten years to see pics of him sporting a belly that’s a full on barrel. When the owner said the team wouldn’t rebuild so that Alex could get the record (or however he phrased it) I think the whole thing lost some credibility but two things happened this year that I’m impressed with. The summer moves they made ended up being bulls eyes and Ovy clearly wants this over because he’s playing harder than he has in other recent years. Like you said it’s impressive he’s playing well, he’s been able to turn it on for the push. I’m not dialed on the minutes given out with the Caps but I’ve seen some examples of them really playing him a ton - so they’re clearly pushing for it too. I’m sure everyone on some level just wants to get past it and play hockey because they’re a good team.

The NHL and KHL did sign an agreement to honor one another's contracts in July 2008. I thought I read somewhere that the agreement kind of went out the window in 2022, for reasons we all know but are better left unsaid here, but I can't find anything on that so maybe not.

As for Radulov, it was an interesting case. Him signing in the KHL was announced one day after the NHL-KHL agreement was signed, so people cried foul and the IIHF ordered that his KHL contract be voided, but the KHL brass argued that his contract was signed before the agreement was signed. He was suspended from international play while the IIHF investigated, but the suspension was eventually lifted, and the Predators officially suspended him without pay for the 08-09 season, as you pointed out.
