He said to Jamie McLennan and Jeff O’Neil that he wants to retire right after the goal

Literally taking off his equipment while celebrating on the ice and slowly making his way towards his car.
Let’s just hope he doesn’t do it slapshot style

Damn that's sad to see. Malkin is also expected to retire after next year, so Sid's going to be the only one left of the Sid/Geno/Ovi era.

Plot twist. Crosby plays long enough to surpass Ovechkin's goal record after he leaves for KHL.

Plot twist 2 - Ovechkin makes an NHL return at age 48 to try and take it back.

Honestly wonder what kind of goalscoring record he could set in the KHL. Obviously not most goals all time but maybe a 40 goal season at 41?

Does Malkin join him?

Understandable, depending on his family situation.

He'd have the goal record, a Stanley Cup and a trophy case bigger than Phil Kessel's refrigerator. Not much more to prove in the NHL.

If he breaks the record this year, do the Caps and he just mutually agree to end his contract in the offseason? If he really is tired of the whole preparing for a season thing, then it feels like that motivation will be significantly lower if there is no record to chase.

Malkin will retire after this year. He gets a 3.8 million dollar bonus this July 1 and has a $1 million dollar salary next year. He won’t be sticking around to play for $1 million bucks

We were fortunate to have him to watch all his great career. He can go home to retire in his domestic league where he will be a king.

Not surprised. He's only here to break Gretzky's record then he will fade off into the sunset and never be heard from again.
You make it sound so mundane lol. Like he isn't about to break a record once thought unbreakable.
The fact Ovie played in some of the more low scoring periods, especially compared to the 80's makes it more special imo.
