There likely isn’t any negotiating tactics at this point. They were waiting to see if he was going to get an AHL game, they’ve said the whole time if they need him signed to play he’ll be signed. If he signed with the Canes he couldn’t play in the AHL playoffs and they were maybe going to play him there. Now that the minor league team is out of the playoffs he’ll probably be signed…but he’s unlikely to play yet. That offer would probably get beat by another team as things currently stand.
But if Nikishin suddenly signs a contract extension with SKA and stops wanting to come to the NHL unless traded from Carolina, his value could tank a bit.
It's just making a mountain out of nothing on the Hurricanes' management's part.
Sign the friggin' guy and stop jerking around lest.
You only stand to lose by employing such negotiation tactics.
The reason he isn’t playing is RBA isn’t going to play him over the vets, which is why he isn’t playing….not the contract status.
