Willander is another guy in contract disputes. I guess Nikishin for Willander + a bit of an add could be something viable if it comes down to it.

Nikishin is the best defensive prospect in the league and it would suck but I’m sure if Carolina were forced to trade him (highly doubt it comes to that), Willander is probably the closest thing in value while also being someone that could potentially be available. Theres obviously “better” and shinier defensive prospects than Willander but they’re not in the middle of contract disputes and aren’t getting traded. It would be the best all around defensive prospect for the best two way defensive prospect from that sort of standpoint as there really isn’t a better two way defensive prospect than Willander.

Ultimately i do think he gets signed.

I cannot think of another situation when a player goes to North America and the team refuses to sign him to an NHL contract........essentially keeping him in limbo. And especially when Carolina said they already signed him.

Top 5 pick moves the needle very little for the Canes frankly, and nothing else the bruins have is even remotely interesting to give up Nikishin. Obviously it’d be Nikishin + for Pasta (although that value could change once we actually see him play in the NHL and if he gets a good value contract this summer which is rumored to be in the cards). Personally I wouldn’t even do Nikishin for Pasta straight up, but I’m also higher on Nikishin than anyone and think he’ll be a cost controlled Hedman caliber 2 way 1D within the next few years. Odds are I’m wrong on that but we’ll see soon enough

nah I just don't think Pastrnak at 11M is worth as much as people think. Could potentially get a better player in Marner for a bit more than that as a UFA without needing to give up any assets too. Pasta at times has been a net negative in the playoffs due to his inconsistent effort and incredibly poor defense.

The logic they were using is that if they signed him to the NHL deal, he couldn’t play for the Wolves for the AHL playoffs, if that’s the route they wanted to take.

And that logic made sense at the start of the playoffs for both teams. However, with Carolina guaranteed (at least) 4 more games and the Wolves’ next game possibly being their last one, it no longer makes sense to hold him in limbo between the two.

My guess is they want to him to be playing, and since Carolina is playing well in the current series they don't want to mess with the chemistry.

Probably what they are waiting on is to see if the AHL wins this first 3 game series or not. No sense in signing him to an AHL PTO for one single game, but if they manage to get past it then it would be worth it for a minimum of 4 games.

If the AHL team gets bumped then they sign him to the NHL deal and maybe try and work him in if someone is injured or if they are up 3-0 and want to rest someone or something.
