Value of: Alex Vlasic in a trade

What could Alex Vlasic get the Blackhawks in a trade?

The Hawks have a lot of young left handed d-men with potential and NHL games under their belt (Vlasic, Korchinski, Kaiser, del Mastro, Allan) - but what they don't have at the NHL level are young top-6 wingers already established in the NHL. Is there a win-win trade out there to be found?

Vlasic details:

LD with very good skating, can skate the puck out, plays top PK.
23 years old (turns 24 in June)
6'6" / 217 lbs
179 NHL games in top-4 role (mostly top-pairing this past season)
7 goals / 42 assists = 49 points (offense improving with 4 goals / 26 assist = 30 points this past season)
Contract: $4.6M for 5 more years - UFA in 2030.

Maybe his rocket ascension had some bumps in the road as the team turned to a revolving door of youth on the blueline - he’s still a 23 year-old top pairing minute muncher with sky high defensive value and a bit of offensive upside. And his contract is one of the absolute best contracts in the NHL.

A 6’-6”, 23 year-old top pairing condor locked in at $4.6 million for 5 more years? That contract alone is worth multiple firsts based on residual cap value.

In a straight swap? You’re taking about a similarly aged forward who is already producing first line totals with the same kind of contract. It would be virtually impossible to find a one for one match. But be prepared for this thread to simply be teams mashing together picks and prospects, not offering a similarly single high end asset.

The simple answer is that he’s not available. Literally the last guy you’d move from that list

Trading Alex Vlasic would be a bad idea. In terms of what you'd get? Less than you'd think and less than he's worth unfortunately due to the way that style of dman is valued in the NHL

What do you mean about the way that style of dman is valued in the NHL? The only “negative” if you even call it that is that he’s a LHD and not a RHD, otherwise he’s the most sought after type of Dman

Yes - he's the last guy I would WANT to trade from the list of young LD's the Hawks have, BUT you have to give to get and none of those other guys will fetch the return that Vlasic will (maybe Korchinski if he eventually improves defensively, but not yet). The Hawks would want an established legitimate top-6 winger under 25 and over 6' tall.

You don’t move him

The need for a top-6 winger to play with Bedard is on the wish list of every Hawks fan - so much so that guys like Marner and Boeser and other guys already in or soon to be past their prime years - or will be by the time the Hawks rebuild process has climbed out of the cellar. Rather than locking up big Cap space for guys who will age out while the Hawks competitive window is still open - acquire someone in the 22-23-24 age range to be a long term piece of the rebuilt team.

And do it from a position of strength - defensive players, especially lefties. If Korchinski wasn't still finding his defensive game and could get as good of a return in a trade - I'd opt to trade Korchinski over Vlasic but at this point in Korchinski's development he isn't as sought after as Vlasic is.

Any interest in Tyson Foerster?

If his style of play as a dman was sought after like others, he'd be on an 8x8 contract rn and not an 4.6x6

I understand but not trading Vlasic for that help.

5 more years on his deal which is good value, Hawks most proven defenseman heading into next season, turns 24 in June. Local guy who wants to be here. Why would Hawks be trying to trade him?
Exactly and it seems like half the guys in this thread don't really understand how good he actually is either.

I understand and respect your opinion but the question of "why" is clearly spelled out in the original post.

If Korchinski or del Mastro or Allan or Kaiser could get the type of player needed to play with Bedard - I would have proposed one of them - but I don't believe any of them could return a player better than what we already have like Donato or Bertuzzi or Mikheyev. I'm shooting for a player like a Seth Jarvis or a Dylan Guenther.

Gotcha, similar aged top line forward that is signed long-term. Not sure how much more available those guys are either. If Carolina figures out this thing with Nikishin they should have him where Vlasic would play.
