Both Lebrun & Dreger say the Sabres upped their offer to $10M AAV. Ultimately not enough to entice Tuch to stay.

Jarmo Seemed to indicate that he was unwilling to go full term. I wonder if that or the bonus structure were sticking points. I’m also certain that Adams starting at less than Thompson‘s contract last summer was a sour point.

Is there a chance that Danforth decides to retire instead of trying to come back for the kneecap injury, and Kampf could assume that role?

I highly doubt that.

Plus, Kampf is a pending UFA and isn't signed. He was likely included to keep Washington at 50 contracts until the new league year kicks in on 7/1.

I heard we would go 7 x 10 and this pissed me off. The fact he signed equals an extra 14 million with the extra year. Whoop. I think he gets booed when the Caps come here. I know it sound trivial to say it's an extra 14 mill but so what. We offered 70 mill and you would be a year closer to signing a final deal. If you make it that far. I'm actually getting more and more pissed thinking of things he said not really ringing true outside of he's got to take care of his family...

Seattle probably screwed themselves out of Tuch by chasing a Robertson move that didn’t work out.

Couldn’t commit the money to Tuch when they were tied up in Robertson talks.

I’m sure Tuch would have gone. He’s a soulless money chasing bitch.

$14 million is more than everyone on this message board will make collectively in a lifetime. It matters. A lot. To Tuch, his family and all the people he loves.

I get that. But endorsements, the fact he might be able to sign another contract at 37 years old vs 38. I get it. It's 14 million. but don't talk the shit you talked to walk for that.
Tom Brady always took less money then he could have asked for to make sure the team would be good around him. Tuch's play, ain't that.

Woah. Just saw his no trade clauses. The fact he also got a full NMC to begin, and then big number lists through until the end makes the AAV even more unpalatable if i'm a GM.

NMCs used to be a player benefit that meant a drop in AAV. "You want to control where we can trade you to, we are paying you less then."

Nitpicky detail before I get to my actual response: I'm still ~15 years from retirement, but when I get there I will have earned between $4-5 mil for my career. Considering this board is full of people who spend money on NHL hockey tickets and merch, I'm guessing any random 10-12 of us probably exceed $14 mil in career earnings.

That said:

1) You are absolutely correct when you say the difference between $70 mil and $84 mil doesn't matter. Either one sets up your family in complete security for multiple generations.

2) The contract he agreed to is toxically structured against any sort of buyout. He gets signing bonuses most years plus significant trade protection later on. This contract would *hurt* to move...which tells me Tuch valued stability over loyalty.

...which brings me to 3) It generally only takes a few years for pro athletes to realize that their "childhood team" is just an employer with benefits and drawbacks like any other. My experience is in baseball front offices, and (many) years ago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle let it slip that he was just waiting until he was eligible for free agency so he could sign with his hometown St. Louis Cardinals. But when his contract was up...he re-signed in Chicago. Tuch chose DC and the Caps...and there's nothing wrong with that.
