Sort of just thinking through options post lottery, but if the Isles take Schaefer, they'll have a bit of a log jam at LHD. George showed he's not out of place on an NHL roster this season, and we have recent 2nd rounders Pulkinnen and Odelius developing in Bridgeport (Bolduc as well). This is in addition to Pelech (M-NTC) and Perunovich (RFA) under team control at the NHL level (plus UFA Mike Reilly).

Obviously love Romanov (RFA this summer) but maybe there's a team that would trade a similar aged top 6 forward for him?

IDK about a similar aged top 6 F but the wings could do a package around prospects/picks since that's what we have expendable. Lombardi + 1st or something.

This post has been up 7mins already and no one's mentioned Kirby Dach? Unreal.

Seriously though, if Romanov can still play on the right side effectively, I'd welcome him back to MTL. Don't think we've got a top-6 forward available that fits the bill though.
He's only played the left side since he's been here.

Hearing the Bruins and Flyers faithful talk about their team needs, I don't know that Hagens drops that far.
I doubt it too. It depends on who is there, but I'm of the mind that having another top ten talent that comes up with the rest of our core is more valuable than having Romanov on a bottom 10 team for a few years. Many Isles fans won't agree with me and won't want to deal him, but I think it's something you need to consider

Hey, we haven't even gotten feedback from vocal Sabre fans who will freak out at the idea of a LD. Granted, I am not attached to any of their defense still being part of their defense other than Dahlin and would be moving out plenty of the guys they already have to make room.

Why not keep him? Pelech is getting older and Schaefer would need time to develop.

In the time it takes for Schaefer to get to his prime (which theoretically represents our peak competitive window), Romanov will be 30 and trending downward.

Obviously it's not a trade we need to make, just exploring options now that our outlook has changed so dramatically overnight

I'd keep him for a few years, it is a wear and tear position.

You could always extend Romanov and trade him in down the road if you needed to.

Draft picks / rebuilding is important but so is a stable team.

He'll be a veteran leader that the next young core will respect and look up too.

Ideally teams should have 2 cores, 1 group competing against teams top players and know the system the coach is wanting them to play, this group is in their prime 27-34. The 2nd group is 18-25 that is learning how to become like group 1.

Romanov is the last defenseman on the roster I’d move. Especially for a mediocre package of a late 1st and fringe prospect.
I'd be happy to offer Danielson or MBN if that would make it closer. I think Lombardi will be a better player anyways lol.

Danielson + top-10 protected 2026 DET 1st seems like a pretty good offer to me, but I guess Detroit can't really afford to do better than that.

Still not interested in moving Romanov. Pelech on the other hand is available.

It's true and I'm definitely not against keeping him. Again though, immediately received a 9th overall offer - I think there's merit in asking if you'd rather have a top 6 forward entering their prime with him. At least one of O'Brien/Martin/Eklund/Mcqueen will be there at that point. If those are the type of offers you're going to get I think you have to look into it

I don't really see the point in moving him. If anything, i'd be waiting for Pelech's NTC to kick down to partial and trying to move him instead. Maybe even try to get a jump on it if you can find a team he'd be willing to go to with his partial list and just getting it done ahead of time. He's obviously getting older and slowing down noticeably, but he's still a solid shutdown Top-4D on a contract that is going to look like a bargain come July 1st prices. So i'm sure there'd be interest, and from playoff teams even, that he might actually be willing to go to.
