Value of: Alex Romanov

Since he's not putting a lot of points, he ain't going to get the big bag
He's young, reliable defensive defenseman that can play on either left or right side, and he's hyper physical
Great second pair dman that can go on top line from time to time

If he's available, he'd fetch a 1st + at a minimum, maybe multiple 1sts
Edmonton would be all over this for sure, unless Romanov decide he's worth 8M or something crazy
I think we’re looking at something between 6-7M

If we were doing a big retool both Romanov and Dobson would be the 2 defensemen I keep unless we got an amazing return(ie not picks and prospects unless it was an A+ prospect)
Keep in mind, when Romanov was moved to the Island, there was general consensus among fans that only 3 Habs were unavailable for trade: Suzuki, Caufield and... Romanov.

Yeah, no shot Romanov is immovable. He had some great stretches last year while the rest of the D was injured. He’s definitely a warrior and a high character dude, and not someone that you need to move.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a price. An 8th overall in a draft where we have a #1 is worth a ton.

It's a bad trade in hindsight but Habs had too many LHD.

Top 3 of 4 D being Schaefer, Dobson, Romanov seems like a nice thing
If Islanders are serious about becoming cup contenders, they need to do a rebuild. I don't think it would be good asset management to hold onto Dobson AND Romanov. One, or possibly both, should be moved for valuable younger picks / prospects. Islanders should also be trading one or both of Pulock and Mayfield. If the team is going to be bad for at least a couple of years, then keeping Pelech until his contract ends in 2029 isn't an issue at all.

Getting pick #13 wasn't bad. But Dach....

My point was just that management can have a different viewpoint than fans. And Montreal did in fact have a lot of young LD.

As someone who's seen every minute of every Islanders game he's played, Alex Romanov is vastly overrated by people here. Eighth overall? In a heartbeat. Romanov is a defensive d-man who's not big and is an average skater. He's gotta be paired with someone who can move the puck because he can't do much with the puck on his stick in his own zone. There's the barest hint of some kind of offensive talent in there, but for the three seasons he's been on the island, it's often nowhere to be seen.

He can have good stretches of play where you think he's turned a corner, but then it comes crashing down. It's also not a real coincidence that his best play often lines up when he's paired with Dobson at HIS best.

You mean I can trade him and get the eighth overall? Sign me up. Just made my day.

There are a lot of people who think different, and they have watched most of his games as well.

16th + 17th plus maybe an AHLer is what I was going to offer before I saw your post. You wouldn't take that?
Both is different then one pick. One and a career minor leaguer ain't happening. Also quality over quantity.

And you're right?.. You sound a little bit impudent, to put it mildly.
He’s simply not the kind of player that is untouchable. He does not drive play, nor does he shut it down. He’s a good player who can be a compliment to a more offensive minded D man. That 100000% does not make him untouchable, especially in a contract year.

It looks like the 13th that was traded for him will probably clearly out value him by next season. Now we’re the team in a modified rebuild - we’re turning down the 8th? Or the 16th + 17th? Not to mention the cap flexibility they come with? Yeah, no shot.

We will likely move Mayfield and try and move Pulock which wouldn’t keep them from moving Romanov as well. If you moved all three you still have an NHL defense already under team control.

Pelech - Dobson
Perunovich - Deangelo
George - Boqvist

…I didn’t say it was a GOOD NHL defense, but all of those guys are NHL players. They’re not trying to win anything next year - the opposite actually. Just trying to illustrate that we have D men to spare, and a GM might see value in unlocking 17M a year for the next 5 or so seasons.

Wait, you expected me to change my opinion because people think I'm wrong? Give me a break.

Here's a question: What does Romanov do so well that he should be considered untouchable by the Isles?

I really liked Romanov as a Hab, I think having a guy like that keeps players honest attacking the ozone.
One thing with him, and I'm not sure if it's still the case, I thought sometime he saw the right play but lacked ability or precision to execute. Many times he aimed for the right player with his first pass, but didn't connect. Is that still the case?

Yes, but maybe to a lesser extent than when he was on MTL. He runs off of adrenaline and work ethic rather than pure skill. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means that he's best served as the compliment on his pairing, rather than the alpha.

He's got enough foot speed and hockey sense to play with (and against) dynamic players. He can step up into a first pairing role and play 25 mins a game for short spurts of time if there are injuries. He's a great player to have, but not one so valuable that the Isles won't listen on him.

I have to admit, this fits more with my view of him. He didn’t show much offense in Montreal despite getting chances (like #1 PP role on arrival) but that never was his game. Most of us loved the guy, but he was more of a deluxe complementary guy than someone you build a pairing around.

Matheson showed a lot of offense, though, that's why Montreal fans adore him...
