He's not a fit for a top 6 role but he can be very useful on the 3rd with his speed
He doesn't bother me for the time being his contract is pretty good

Hate to disagree with you as I usually love your posts, but on this one I have to.
Yes he's been bounced around, but some lines mates have given him golden opportunities and he just can't bury them.
He's just not that good at NHL hockey. He IS a fast skater, though. Modern day Oleg Petrov.

I think we need to accept he’s not a top 6 player. I do believe he can a very effective third liner player and used on the penalty kill with his speed.
Just needs to embrace a reduced role, much like Anderson did this year, and he can be an asset for this team.

Stop dreaming this guy will not be there in a near future, THANKS GOD. And for those, who keep comparing him to Byron and Lekhonen give me a freakin break.
Byron was a speedster who can play everywhere in the lineup because of his hockey IQ, He wasn't scoring in breakaway at the beginning but who give a f*** about that. At least, he was doing something good everytime he have put a feeth on the the ice. Bob Hartley, the coach of Calgary at the time, was sad to loose him. Nobody is sad to loose Newhook, we are half here hoping we can drive him personnally to the airport for his next destination.
Lekhonen probably the forward we have saw since a decade or two with the highest commitment, ready to get kill to make the puck going forward, an elite PK guy, an elite shutdown guy, an elite even strength guy who never hurt you without producing big numbers. The only thing this guys was not doing here it's scoring goal with consistency. A dream player for any coach.
Newhook is the Deadpool version of these guy, some guy need to slack the kool-aid.

I don't know if you fall in love with your player, you look at the situation with pink glasses, you trying to make each move like a good one or something else but just stop. This guy have no future with us before the playoff run and it's more obvious now, we need to be tougher to play against and even if he has a lot of speed and play the game with a lot of energy, he will never be a answer for that problem.
We try to build your next dynasty or contender team. If you have a blank sheet to put a team together. On how many fantasy team this guy will be on your team. NONE
If you still don't understand and want to have a dose of reality. Someone create a poll on the main board about him. Who considered Newhook to be able to play on a 3rd line of a contender team? The poll will be 95-5 or 90-10 if he have a lot of friends, a big family and a lot of habs fan do the poll ....
We have try with him but it's a totally fail no matter what you said and it will be addition by subtraction before anything else. The day he will be move, it will be a good one.

Newhook is a victim of not having the right center to play with IMO. On the smaller side yes but I really do like his energy and work ethic (something you can't teach). His skill/skating is solid.
Imagine acquiring someone at age 22 and then giving up on him at age 24 (before his prime)? Some of you guys who want to "get rid of him" today will also be crying when he is performing on another team in his prime years.
Find the right 2C and some of our problems sort out.

I dont want to get rid of Newhook....hes only 24.....still wish we had Lehkonen though.

Yeah I'm ready to move on from this guy. Hardly see upside higher than 20 goals and 20 assists if stars align. Huge step back from him this year.

Fast skater...that's the only positive thing I can say about his skillset. He does not have enough complimentary skills to compliment that speed to be an effective top 6 forward. Passing...sub-par. Shot...sub-par. Vision...sub-par. Physicality...LOL...non-existent. If he could work on penalty killing, he MIGHT be able to become a bottom 6 guy who excels on the PK and is a threat for shorthanded breakaways like Paul Byron was. I don't see a role for him outside of that.

I'm not sure if this was directed at posters like me because I did post Newhook could be a serviceable player on the PK. Newhook has the speed to play on a pure checking line, and we don't how he'd look on the PK because he never played there, but his speed could be an asset. If Anderson could do it, I'm not sure why Newhook can't have a shot at it.
It's not about "falling in love" with a player, but more about finding a role for a player on the roster. I won't care much if he's traded, but he doesn't have much value atm and was thinking a reduced role could be an option.

That proves that he hasn't been used as a PKer not that he can't PK.
It's also worth noting that it's fairly common for a player to add a PK role later on in their careers. For example Matthews this year has averaged 1:37 of SH time, yet his first 481 games in the NHL he averaged 3s a game.
It's certainly a question mark for Newhook, but we can't really say one way or the other whether he would do well with a PK role or not. Josh Anderson didn't PK much at all during his first few seasons, then started getting some time before getting traded to MTL and not being used on the PK until this year.

Matthews is an exceptional player who was relied on for other duties than PK.
Newhook is a remarkably bad player who is useless in every special team situation and most even strength ones.
It could be that he can play PK but he hasn’t shown he can do anything else all that well so why assume he can play the PK?

The idea of having a really speedy player on the PK is that he can keep the opposing PP honest.
A fast player can steal the puck, maybe go on a breakaway and score. We've seen players like Eller, Pacioretty, and Lapierre do that. Coach St-Louis did that as a player.
Anderson is a shooter, so he's a threat to do that. But Newhook will not be a threat as his shot has low accuracy.

It doesn't make sense for the team to keep a mediocre player on the roster simply because he might become an effective PKer.

Newhook has some guardian angels: 1) Hughes paid a lot to acquire him (sunk cost), 2) that he’s fit and fast so there aren’t any doubts about his athletic ability/availability, and 3) there’s already so much roster turnover pending that they wouldn’t readily rush to add another player (ex)change.
Dach and Laine are medical doubts
Matheson is a pending 2026 UFA and an excessive LHD
Anderson has high trade value for the first time in two years
Gallagher is absolutely cooked
Dvorak, Armia, Pezzetta are UFAs
Savard is retiring
Xhekaj and Struble are unimpressive NHLers and could be easily upgraded

Newhook does things that very few players on this team do. He actually forchecks, he creates turnovers and once Laine got dumped his line could create pressure. He also is really good at gaining zone entry with control, he can dump the puck and actually beat the defenders to it. I know these things are not important to his haters because they don't actually follow hockey, they only watch stat sheets but next year he will have a chance with a more functional line and I think he will perform much better.

We just got destroy in the playoffs with 6 freaking forward who did nothing to help and play like Vanilla. If they were good with the puck and being the Capitals of 2010, we didn't care about the size issue but now they suck with the puck and they don't play physical at all

Did you forget how we win the Stanley Cup? We need a good bottom 6 players who play with the knife in the teeth who are good to kill penalty. Someone remember some of these guys Mike Keane, Guy Carbonneau, Bob Gainey, Chris Nilan, Ryan Walter, Brian Skrudland, Mike Mcphee etc...
It's that we need to built not take a vanilla player who suck everywhere on the ice and try to became someone who is not; Newhook doesn't play the PK and I wil not bet on him to do it because of his profile. Even if he became a good one for the others reasons, he is not a keeper at all. A NHL player just not good enough to be a part of a winning/contending team. Colorado have realize that ....
Can we have some of these players in your prospects. Can Florian became a Nilan 2.0 without being that good to fight? Can Arber became a forward to use his strength instead of wasting his time at the d where he can't use it? Can Tuch can became a McPhee? Maybe, maybe not but we need to begin to adress this need.
I have talk about it a year ago before the playoff run, we need to add players like Voronkov, Marchment, Pospisil etc.. try to add one each year because at some point it will became an issue; we are here now with the playoff run exposing all your weakness in that part.
Like everyone else I would like Crosby but if he don't move, I would be one of the rare to like to have Bennett. How much you will pay to have a hybrid players between Phillip Danault, EV good numbers and doing the dirty job, and Josh Anderson, who can change the game with his shoulder and the way he played the game. I will pay a lot of money. If we can survive with Gally at 6,5 and Anderson at 5,5 or miss Danault at 5,5, we can find a way to add Bennett for 7 or 8 with all the money we have. He bring something others can't and it's way more easy to find the missing piece, winger, on the second line after that. Bennett is not the sexy choice but its the guy who got us closer to achieve something. His contract will be probably awful in his last years, but the average player will gain close to 5m a year when the cap will hit 120.

It's that kind of team we need to built to help the people with talent we have already here. I just hope this playoff run will have make them realize that and stop with the vanilla players who only wasted a roster spot for someone who can really help us.
