Player Discussion Alex Newhook (Part 2) : Book an Appointment with New Look Edition

What...Newhook...are you kidding me..that dude has no Iq.

Did.. you read my post, I wrote no matter the size bring me one with great IQ cause Iq is 10x more important than size.

Newhook has no IQ, no vision and no size

Prior to his draft, Newhook was seen like someone with no particular skills but ELITE hockey IQ. Story told that you shouldnt start with "hockey IQ" has the main skill. At least, size translates

Newhook was playing in junior B. He was always considered talented. The question marks was never his skill but the talent level he was playing against and his lack of size and if he would be a center in the NHL.

Lol leople are not able.to analyse IQ.

Sizr is so easy however..my grand Mother could say..hey he is 6.1 , 205..lets draft him

Take a guy like Catton..no size great IQ and vision..I had him 3rd overall last June

Newhook is actually pretty thick

??? Of course Hockey IQ should be the first thing you look for. Skating ability and shot next. But skating and shot are useless without IQ or you would have a whole team of Josh Anderson's and get shutout most games,
I was worried about Slaf because in all the evaluations I saw no one mentioned hockey sense.

Some managements are good at evaluating IQ. Some aren't or like MB will go for the big man over the smart one.

This isnt the point, thing is hockey IQ without elements can be tricky and we shouldnt let go an high skill for that kind of stuff. Is this the 2025 version of Keller vs Jost debate? @Naslund help me

Newhook is the Habs best forecheck and best NZ player with the puck. I dont care if he doesnt score much as a bottom sixer, he has his value.
I have liked his game next to Evans. I want them to be part of a line next year. Newhook is not a top 6 player, and his offensive game suffers when he is a C. It was the same in Colorado. He's useful in that he can spot in as a C if there are injuries, though.

I feel this way too. I also think his defensive deficiencies are way overstated. His D metrics aren't good, but I never look at his defensive play and say, wow he's terrible. I wonder how much of that has been a function of the linemates he's played with all year (Laine, Roy, Dach, Beck).

I really do feel like he's Anderson without the physicality.

Apt comparison, truly, but therein lies the problem. Remove the physicality from Anderson and he is pretty much useless. So why is Newhook useful?

and “Anderson without his physicality” and without the penalty killing is borderline useless.

Others have mentioned “Paul Byron without the penalty killing.”

We’ve set the bar pretty damn low.

He’s finally where he belongs now at least, on 4th line Evans wing.

He's been the constant in that line, and it's been consistently at league bottom levels since the season start.

But he can develop his defensive play if he focuses on becoming an effective 3rd liner instead of trying to get offensive production out of him in an offensive role.

He could grow up to be like a Justin Danforth type player if he gets better at faceoffs and grinding

Most players can be. Don't remember which coach said it but he said it's easier to teach defense to an elite player than teach offence to a depth player.
Well yes of course. PK is probably the "easiest" thing to teach. All you need to do it is a willingness to put your body on the line and to follow a few simple rules.

Not everyone does it because not everyone should and not everyone is willing to put their body on the line.

Newhook has elite speed and is very good on the forecheck, i really wish Martin would actually develop this side of the game instead of relying on vets for the PK. But I guess its tough to blame him because the PK forwards are very good.

Every game he plays he does more things that kills plays or worse, hurts the team more than his “elite” speed leads to anything when he’s on the ice.

We have possession and then his elite IQ selfish shot right into a Caps player, as the last guy back that leads to short handed d zone faceoff- immediately scored on. Brilliant.

Then a lazy back handed sauce into the middle of the ice to no one, lose possession, team takes penalty in d zone right after.

This guy just plain f***ing blows.

What's clear is that he can't have a top 6 role on the team if they want to actually be a contender.

He just can't score, it's as simple as that. Good hustle and all that, doesn't matter. There's so much pressure put on that 1st line because of the lack of scoring from the 2nd line. If the 1st line has an off-night, Montreal literally has no chance to beat anybody, not even the bottom tier teams.
