I think if we're ever going to really appreciate newhook, it'll be once he's in his rightful place of 3rd line winger alongside speedy north-south guys who can crash.

Newhook - Beck - Heiny

It's probably too much to ask Beck to play 3rd C next year but that's the type of setup I think would work best for someone like Newhook.

Newhook hasn't worked out at all. Considering we paid couple firsts for him. I remember Colorado fans saying he can't play top 6 day trade was announced. Before making a trade Hughes be better off reading boards of that teams fans. Over the years Some seen a ton of that players minutes. They can be knowledgeable.

He needs to develop a defensive game if he wants to be a 3rd liner on the team. The guy busts his ass off and it shows, but the instincts aren't really there and more importantly, he's losing his spot to Demidov next season.

I'm assuming he will get PK reps when Armia and/or Evans are gone to see if he can modify his game into that type of player.

His game hasnt evolved which i find a bit concerning especially defensively. I think if he doesnt start seeing PK reps and being developed more defensively, it will be a huge failure from the coaching staff and opportunity lost. Be hugely valuable if he does, similar to Leks

Not sure if this has been posted yet, Hughes said recently on a podcast exactly who we would have taken with the picks we traded for Newhook. He said we would have taken Gavin Brindley and Jacob Fowler. And one reason we could do the trade for Newhook is the scouts thought Fowler would be available in the 3rd round. So if Hughes is telling the truth, it's Newhook or Brindley plus whoever we would have drafted in the 3rd round, assuming Fowler would have already been taken in the 2nd round

About the 17:35 mark:

Edit: it gets more complicated because Hughes then says something about how if Colorado hadn't traded their picks to Montreal for Newhook, then would have taken Fowler before Montreal was up to pick...

They did it with Anderson who provided absolutely nothing last season so I'm hopeful they do it for Newhook.

It sure hurt when said like that :slaugh:

31 and 37 is 2 2nds and of the 20 guys picked there between 2010 and 2020 only ~3 became something.

Habs fans were saying Drouin was trash and was going to be out of the league very soon. He's now a ppg player with the avs.

Disappointing season for him. He was real good to end the year last season. I still think he'd have a lot more goals if he actually converted as he's had a ton of chances that he's whiffed on. Him and Dach struggling like they have really hurt the team. He's still a blazing fast player with what's usually a good shot.

Newhook will break out soon and be one of our best players. He has been playing much better.
Agree completely that he's been very good lately. One of our better players the past few weeks but that also doesn't mean much, unfortunately.

It's really hard to envision a full on break-out type season from Newhook. He just doens't have the awareness or IQ imo. That and he bobbles the puck like crazy.

He's certainly been on of our best players of late though.

I'm with others in thinking they should start grooming him for some PK time. He's got the speed/effort to be an effective player in that role with the right coaching.

I feel like in the end he will be a Josh Anderson replacement - without the physicality.

What that means is disrupting with speed, generating a ton of chances to get up in 30-40 point, 15-20g range.

He could be a pretty good middle 6 type guy is he develops the defensive side of his game like some said earlier. He's starting to understand how to use his great speed to create opening. Now he needs to udnerstand how to use his shot more/improve his release.

There's something there for sure, let's see if he can put it all together and become a 20-20 type guy.

One only needs to compare the posts on this board after a 2 game win streak and a 2 game losing streak to see how knowledgeable the average fan is.

I don’t he would be better then Newhook personally

And Panarin is an exception, look at the Gusev/Shipachev/Plotnikov and cie who many thoughts they would come and have a major impact
But then again if he is talented he don’t need to be better then newhook , there is room for both .
Newhook is a bad 2nd line player but put him on 3rd line and he becomes a great third line player.
It is all in the role one plays .

Allow me to doubt that.

Newhook skates fast, doesn't forecheck, sucks defensively, doesn't play physical hockey and misses 49 of 50 shots on net.

Don't see the better role as a 3rd line player.

Basically, if Newhook doesn't cut it as a 2nd line player on the Habs -- which he clearly doesn't if you want to compete for a Cup again -- he has no role on this team.

Newhook is a fast Drouin. The Drouin version that doesn't play with MacKinnon.

I'm willing to see Newhook on a 3rd line.

I hated Newhook with Laine. But I'm liking Newhook - Dach - Amderson. With Dach not being all the way back, that's pretty much a 3rd line. Also Newhook was good last year with Armia amd Gallagher or Roy.

I think we'll see him on a 3rd line next year. If we get a 2c:

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
Laine - 2c - Demidov
Newhook - Dach - Anderson
Heineman - Beck/Evans/Kapanen- Gallagher/Armia/Kapanen

Looks solid to me. But it's hard to get a good 2c...

See a better third line with Heineman in Newhook's spot, really. prefer the fast, disruptive nature of a physical speedster like Anderson than a soft, fast player like Newhook. Anderson's shot is as good, if not better than Newhook's shot. Heineman is a better all around player than Newhook and also fast.

4th line will suck with what's left, other than Beck or Kapanen, bit those two are probably better suited for a 3rd line role, if they are to have an interesting impact at the NHL level.

I find Anderson and Heineman similar - fast, hard forecheck, limited vision. I see each performing better when playing opposite a player that complements them. They can each be an asset to the two bottom lines of the bottom six - when with the right linemates.
