Player Discussion Alex Newhook (Part 2) : Book an Appointment with New Look Edition

Nice ASSIST last night. :amazed:
I'm hoping the line continues to produce and Newhook starts finishing some of the plays he's involved in maybe holding his stick too tight...

Im hoping he can finish the second half off going 10g-10a. That would give him a 17g and 30pts season. Not ideal given all the chances he got this season to produce, but it's still respectable production. 13g in 37 remaining games would give him a 20g year. That's my target for him.

I do not think he's played anywhere near as bad as his stat line has shown. He generates loads of chances, they just don't go in.

I would say it's hard to pick up apples when you are playing on a line where no one is scoring at ES, but he also didn't pick up apples riding shotgun with Cole and Nick (that is not to say he didnt generate chances, because he did).

Missed a few games of late but even if he wasn’t producing he was doing some damn good dirty work with his speed and tenacity.

Seems like he’s making less bad plays of late. If he cuts out the brain cramps and can stop killing plays on his stick he’d be a handy piece to have even if he doesn’t put together the offense that his tools should dictate.

But if he can put it all together there’s a damn fine player there.

Now I have next to no idea if he can do that consistently long term but he does seem to be improving of late.

Definitely rooting for him. His speed along with Anderson’s is handy to have.

Will be interesting to see who he has chemistry with in a bottom 6 role.

The following could be bottom six players in the not too distant future:

Newhook - Hage - Kapanen
Beck - Evans - Heineman/Roy

Alex Newhook on Martin St-Louis:

“He’s been great. I love since I got here what he’s done for the group and myself, personally. He’s a very personable guy. He’s willing to chat about anything hockey-wise and he has a very open-door concept, which has been nice. He has that player’s mindset. He’s hard on us … He knows what we’re capable of but, at the same time, he understands what we’re going through at times. He’s got a lot of respect from us.”

''He could garner that respect without having much on his coaching resumé previously to coming here. With his career and the way it played out he’s seen a lot and knows what position guys are in in different spots on the team. I’ve felt that first-hand in the way he speaks to the players and gets it from a player’s perspective. I think that’s been huge. He has a great mind for the game and is able to speak it really well to us as well. He’s a great communicator. He has a lot of tools that make him such a good coach.”

It needs to be repeated - this guy is no good. He skates fast and that’s it. He has no idea where to go when he skates, as noted by the awful turnover in the Wild game which ended the Habs chances.

I don’t think he looks up before passing the puck. He cannot play with skilled players. He was at his best with Armia and Gallagher last season. You need him with players that play simple hockey, because that’s all he can do, North-south and hope for bounces.

I don't know why we didn't go to that - and try Dvo with Dach and Laine. Dvo could be the digger, bring up his point totals, and get us an asset in a trade...

Now that Evans and Armia have established themselves as a duo, Newhook could also play with them.

Many options in the bottom six. But please, no more top 6.

Him and Dach haven't worked together at all and have been glued to each other almost all season. It made sense to try and let them work through it when all 4 lines were rolling not to break up other lines, but when we are down to only one good line now it is time to separate them.

With his speed, I would be interested to see how he does on the PK. I think he can still be an effective player for us if they try and convert him to be a Paul Byron type player who kills penalties and can still chip in offensively in the bottom six.
